---- — Amarillo Sox acquire Zach Welch

AMARILLO, Texas — Former Northern Adirondack Central School and Plattsburgh State standout Zach Welch has been acquired by the Amarillo Sox of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

Welch, a catcher, was acquired from San Angelo of the United League. The Sox are one of 13 teams in the American Association, including one of five in the South Division.

Plattsburgh Little League registration this week

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh Little League will hold 2013 player registrations on Jan. 24 and Jan. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Crete Center lobby.

Players must be born between May 1, 2000 and April 30, 2006 to be eligible for the 2013 season. Be prepared to show a birth certificate.

Players must reside in the League boundaries (plattsburghll.webs.com/boundrymap.pdf). Be prepared to show three forms (driver’s license, utility bill, cable bill, vehicle registration, etc.) of residency verification dated between Feb. 1, 2012 and Feb. 1, 2013.

Rates are $45 per player. All checks to be made out to Plattsburgh Little League.

Colby Classic breaks ice March 2-3

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club will host the 29th Annual Colby Classic Ice Fishing Derby on March 2 to 3 at Lake Colby.

The derby is set to start at 7 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. each day.

Contestants can preregister for the derby at the Blue Line Sports Shop in Saranac Lake or on derby days at the Lake Colby beach house across from the Adirondack Medical Center. Derby day registration begins at 6:45 a.m. each day.

Registration fee is $7 for adults per day or $10 for adults for both days. Youths under 16 years of age can register for $3 per day or $5 for both days.

Contestants are eligible to win prizes in the trout, salmon, perch and northern pike categories with separate prizes awarded to adults and youths. The tournament grand prize is a charter-fishing trip for two with Fish Doctor Charters. Door prizes and raffles also awarded.

Fifteen tagged fish will be stocked in Lake Colby prior to the derby courtesy of the NYSDEC – Lake Clear fish hatchery. A $100 prize will be awarded to any lucky fisherman who catches a tagged fish during the derby.

Bait will be available at the Blue Line Sports Shops and the River Bait Shop during the event. For further information, contact derby chairman Cecilia Martin at 201-4009.

Big Buck Banquet to be held Saturday

PLATTSBURGH — The Big Buck Banquet, with the awarding of the coveted green jacket, taxidermy display and Boone and Crocket scorer, will be held at American Legion Post 1619 at 1 p.m. Saturday. Bring any old photos of hunting camps, deer cams, etc. and also any horns or mounts you want scored. For more information, call 561-8706.

Winter Carnival Fun Run Feb. 2

SARANAC LAKE — The 2013 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Fun Run (4 miles) will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2. The start and finish will be at the Ice Palace. Carnival souvenirs will be given out to the first 30 finishers. The event is free. For more information, call David Staszak at 304-5041.

Men’s Hockey to Host Military Appreciation Night Friday

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team will host Military Appreciation Night on Friday as the Cardinals host the Potsdam Bears for a 7 p.m. conference matchup at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Members of the military who attend the game in uniform will be admitted for free on Friday night. Free tickets must be picked up at the Field House Box Office on the night of the event, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Additional tickets will be available for $5 per person.

The Cardinal men’s hockey team will also take the ice in special camouflage jerseys designed specifically for this year’s event. The jerseys will be autographed and auctioned off immediately following the conclusion of the game. All proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation, which is a national leader in providing resources and educational scholarship support to veterans, active servicemembers and their spouses.
