---- — Invasive Species program is Tuesday

PLATTSBURGH — As part of National Safe Boating Week, the Champlain Sail and Power Squadron is co-sponsoring with the Center for Community and Workforce Development at Clinton Community College, “Lake Champlain Invasive Species: Current and Future Trends.”

The program will highlight what boaters can do to help combat the growing invasive species problem.

The presentation by Mark Malchoff, Invasive Species Specialist with the Lake Champlain Research Institute at Plattsburgh State, will be held in Room 348 of the Main Building at Clinton Community College at 7 p.m. May 21.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will allow time for questions, and refreshments will be served after the program.

North Bowl Jr./Adult League starts Wednesday

PLATTSBURGH — The Jr./Adult League will meet May 22 at 6 p.m. at North Bowl Lanes. Bowling will follow at 6:30 p.m.

The league will bowl Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Teams and individuals are welcome.

City of Plattsburgh fun run series begins

PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department held its first fun run of the season last Monday. Seventy-two runners turned out despite a cold wind on the Terry Gordon Bike Path.

Sebastien Bonnabaise won the quarter-mile run in 1:47, Nora Graves the half-mile run in 3:21 and Nick Ladue the one-mile run in 7:21.

Registration for the fun runs begin at 4:45 p.m. Stretching and running tips are given before each run.

Plattsburgh Moose Lodge hosts scholarship tournament

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Moose Lodge #2390 will be hosting its seventh annual scholarship tournament June 8 at the Barracks Golf Course with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

The fee for Moose members is $55 and $60 for non-members.

Baseball Cardinals distribute 2013 team awards

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State baseball team handed out its annual team awards at its final team get-together of 2013 last Friday evening.

In his first season as an assistant coach for the Cardinals, Kris Cauchon received the Special Service Award. The award is given to the person who goes above and beyond what is required in order to better the Plattsburgh baseball program.

With his Plattsburgh career in the books, senior Mike Mulvihill received the Dr. Ernest Rangazas Cardinal Award, while senior Jimmy Rosario was the recipient of the 2013 Coaches Award.

By upping his batting average to .271 after producing a figure of .143 during his initial campaign, sophomore Nick Lupo earned the title of Most Improved Player.

Luke Weaver took home Newcomer of the Year honors after playing in 36 of the 37 games. A native of Plattsburgh, Weaver produced a batting average of .279 and amassed a team-high 41 bases.

After his career year and selection to the All-SUNYAC Second Team, senior Brian Burns was heralded as the Most Outstanding Pitcher.

Junior Brian Latulipe was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. The Plattsburgh native led the Cardinals in a multitude of statistical categories including at bats (125), hits (36), total bases (41), walks (16) and stolen bases (nine).

Duniho, Rasco top bicycle time trials

POINT AU ROCHE — Kevin Duniho and Erin Rasco battled a raging wind to turn in top times for men and women in the first Point Au Roche bicycle time trial of the season.

North Country Baseball Camp offering two sessions

MORRISONVILLE — There will be two sessions of the North Country Baseball Camp this summer.

The South Acres Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 24 to 28. The cost is $105 with various discounts available.

The Peru Camp will be held July 8 to 12 at Laphams Mills Park. That camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday.

Fred Hooper retirement party

KEENE — The Keene Central School Teachers’ Association is hosting a retirement party for Fred Hooper, its longtime Physical Education Teacher and Athletic Director.

CCFOA hosts annual scholarship golf tournament

WESTPORT — The CCFOA will be holding its annual scholarship golf tournament at Westport Golf and Country Club June 2.

There will be a 10 a.m. shotgun start and format is a four-person scramble with a modified Oldsmobile handicap.

Cost is $220 per team if paid by May 26 and $250 per team thereafter. Ten dollars may be deducted for each Westport member on any team. Cost includes golf, cart, post-tournament meal, complimentary refreshments and cash prizes for three places handicap and first place low gross based on 20 or more teams.

Skins are optional at $20 per team. Also, prize and cash combinations will be given for closest to the pin on all par three holes.

Shaughnessy granted NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Pat Shaughnessy, who was a member of the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer and baseball teams, has been granted an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship — an award given three times a year to student-athletes who exhibit academic and athletic excellence.

Shaughnessy is one of 58 NCAA 2012-13 fall sports postgraduate scholarship winners, with 29 male and 29 female student-athletes each receiving $7,500.

Shaughnessy will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Childhood Education and a minor in coaching.

To qualify, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in or have just completed their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution’s faculty athletics representative.

Alzheimer’s Walk/5K Cross-Country fun Run June 15

SARANAC LAKE — The Alzheimer’s Walk and 5K Cross-Country Fun Run 2013 will be held at Saranac Lake High School. The event is planned for June 15.

Registration will be held at 10 a.m. The walk and run will start at 10:30 a.m.

Register as an individual or as a team. For the Fun Run, costumes are admired but not required.

Any individual raising $500 or more will be entered to win a grand prize. Every $500 raised means another chance to win. There will be refreshments, prizes and DJ Overneath Productions with Josh and Holly Clement.

This is a recreational walk and run sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center to raise awareness and funds for the Third Age Adult Day Center. The proceeds remain in the community to support programs and services.

High Peaks Mini Tri Series starts June 17

LAKE PLACID — The 2013 High Peaks Mini Triathlon Series will run every Monday night from June 17 to Aug.12. This is the 29th season of one of the longest running triathlon series in the U.S.

Participants should meet at the Mirror Lake Beach Area in Lake Placid. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m., the Pre-race meeting will be at 6:15 p.m. and the races start at 6:30 p.m.

The triathlons consist of a 400-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a three-mile run.

There will be post-race awards and raffle prizes at 8 p.m. There are individual and team categories.

BEEKMANTOWN — The Beekmantown Booster Club Wrestling Golf Tournament will be held June 15 at the Barracks Golf Course. There will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start, and the tournament is a four-man scramble with no handicaps. The cost of $65 per person includes golf, cart, food and soda and water. Beer can be purchased at the Pro Shop.

Cavanagh Named SUNYAC Men’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year

CORTLAND — in his second season Head Coach Ryan Cavangh has been selected as the SUNYAC Coach of the Year. Cavanagh becomes the first coach in the 15-year history of the Plattsburgh State lacrosse program to receive the league’s award. Cavanagh and his staff led the Cardinals to a 14-4 record in 2013 and its first appearance in the SUNYAC Championship game against Cortland this past Saturday.

Knights of Columbus tourney June 14

PERU — St. Augustine’s Knights of Columbus Council 7273 will host its 27th-annual golf tournament at the Adirondack Golf and Country Club on June 14. Hospice golf tournament slated for July 13

ROUSES POINT — The 18th-Annual Hospice of the North Country Golf Tournament — formerly the Clinton County/Carol Wallett Memorial Golf Tournament — will be held Saturday, July 13, at the North Country Golf Club. It will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The format is as follows: four-person handicap scramble, men’s and women’s divisions, maximum handicaps (men-24, women-36).

Entry fee includes greens fees, golf cart, prizes, gift bag and a barbecue lunch to follow tournament play.

Fees are $75 per player for non-members and $55 per player for member.

Youth track, field games held

PLATTSBURGH — The annual Local Hershey Track and Field Games for Youth, presented by the Clinton County Youth Bureau, attracted 37 boys’ and girls’ to the Plattsburgh High School Track and Field Complex.

Many of them will advance to compete at the Hershey New York State West Track and Field Finals at Ilion High School June 29.

American Legion Post 1619 hosts Crab Island Memorial Golf Tournament

PLATTSBURGH — The 9th Annual Crab Island Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by The American Legion Post 1619 and Michelob Ultra, will be held July 20 at the Barracks Golf Course.

There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start. All Proceeds will go to a full scholarship to Clinton Community College.

Registration forms have been mailed to last year’s team captains.

The deadline for the before-mentioned registration and money is June 20.

After June 20, the tournament will be open to the public. A waiting list is welcomed.
