Free Learn to Luge Program in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID — Youngsters are invited to learn to luge every Tuesday and Thursday in July and August. Learn to Luge sessions run from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and are offered free of charge, courtesy of USA Luge.

Boys and girls age eight to 12 will receive instruction from USA Luge coaches and athletes using real luge sleds equipped with wheels. Space is typically limited, so it’s important to sign up early. Walk-ups are allowed if space is available. Sign-up will be on a weekly basis, and kids may attend as many or as few sessions as they wish.

Sliding will take place on the entrance road to the Lake Placid landfill (Recycle Circle). Participants should arrive 15 to 20 minutes in advance of each session. While sliding, each participant should wear sweat pants/long pants, long sleeve t-shirt and low top sneakers. Sleds and helmets will be provided.

Participants will receive instruction on position, steering, braking and general luge technique. Sliders will also be offered the opportunity to participate in occasional competitions. Each participant will also receive a USA Luge t-shirt. A waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian prior to their child’s first session.

To register, call Fred Zimny at 523-2071 Ext. 105.
