---- — Philadelphia Flyers in Placid this weekend

LAKE PLACID — The Philadelphia Flyers will hold a preseason training came in Lake Placid Sept. 19-22. The camp will not be open to the public.

Father Flynn gets hole-in-one

PLATTSBURGH — Rev. Francis Flynn recorded his first career hole-in-one Monday while playing golf at The Barracks. He used an iron on the seventh hole.

Msgr. Dennis Duprey and Rev. William Muench witnessed the ace.

Rod, gun offers law enforcement discount

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Rod and Gun Club now offers a Law Enforcement Discount. Current LEO’s would only pay a $30 family membership to join the club.

The club has a heated 8-point indoor firing range. Pistol shooters practice on Wednesday and Friday nights starting at 7:30. Rifle shooters currently fire on Tuesday nights at 6 with additional days starting in October. A nightly fee of $7 per adult and $5 per student is also collected.

Sheppard sweeps at Mohawk Raceway

AKWESASNE — Super Matt Sheppard enjoyed a perfect weekend, claiming his third and fourth DIRTcar Series victories of the season in the two-day Twin Leaf Nationals at Mohawk International Raceway.

Sheppard moved in front on lap 49 of Sunday’s 75-lap feature and held it the rest of the way. Carey Terrance recovered from an early slip to finish second with Danny Johnson, third. With 15 laps to go in Saturday’s main event, Sheppard regained the lead down the backstretch. Billy Dunn remained on his back bumper in the closing laps, but could not get past the 3-time and defending series champion.

Dale Caswell led the last 100 feet to claim his first series win of 2013 in the 40-lap Go Nuclear for Late Models on Saturday with Rick Miller grabbing the checkers on Sunday.

Dave Marcuccilli would prove to be too much in the DIRTCar Sportsman series 50-lap event as he held on for his first series win of the season on Saturday. Marc Lalonde won the 50-lapper for DIRTcar Pro Stock Series racers on Sunday. 

Stick-n-puck, public-skating sessions set

PLATTSBURGH — The Ameri-Can North Sports Center will be open for stick-n-puck Friday, from 5:30-7 p.m., and public skating, 12:30-2 p.m.

Fraser team wins Elks golf league

ROUSES POINT— Team 3, with Kirk Fraser, Gary Bingel, Vaughn Button and Dave Coonan, came in first in the Plattsburgh Elks Club Golf League this season at North Country Golf Club.

Two teams tied for second — Team 5, with Jeremy Ballard, Kent Olsen, John Zurlo and Dennis McCarthy, and Team 1, with Jeff Bouyea, Bob Trombley, Mike Trombley and Dick Ayotte.

Lester LaPlante was King of the Hill for 2013.

Malone to host grouse and woodcock hunt

MALONE — The Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) has scheduled its second annual New York Grouse and Woodcock Benefit Hunt for the weekend of October 18-20. Held at the On the Wing Grouse Camp in Malone, the two-day guided hunt has a 20-gun limit.

Registration — which includes guides with dogs, lodging, all meals with a full banquet dinner on Saturday — is $800 inclusive per hunter based on double occupancy. Individual guided hunt (single occupancy) $900, or two-hunter guided hunt (double) $1,500. Hunters are encouraged to bring their own dogs, as dogs are permitted at the Holiday Inn. 

Participants also receive a one-year RGS membership, complimentary RGS shell bag, two boxes of 12 or 20 gauge shotgun shells and a RGS sponsor cap and knife.

According to On the Wing Grouse Camp president and NYS licensed guide (#0629) Bruce Bennett, the hunt will take place on camp grounds in Ellenburg Center — a 1,000 acre parcel managed specifically for grouse and woodcock. The property is adjacent to 5,000 acres of state land.

A New York State small game or sportsmen’s license is required and provided you are already in the system can be purchased on line at: Non-residents will need to provide a hunter education certificate ID number. Out-of-state hunting licenses are not accepted.

Peru Hall of Fame dinner Oct. 12

PERU — The Peru Central School Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner will be held Oct. 12 at the Keeseville Elks Club with five new members to be inducted.

The Class of 2013 includes Scott Woodward, John Neyenhouse, Elmer Duprey, Steve St. Clair and Matt Bezio.
