Preseason track information needed
PLATTSBURGH — The indoor track & field season will begin Friday. In order to put together a preview, the Press-Republican needs information by Thursday afternoon on the following teams: Saranac, Plattsburgh High, Ticonderoga and Peru.

U-8 soccer team seeks players
PLATTSBURGH — Soccer United Premier is looking for boys and girls for its U-8 indoor soccer development program. The program will consists of one practice a week along with one game a week indoors at the City of Plattsburgh Crete Center, from Jan. 12 through the first week of March.

PHS teams earn state academic honors
PLATTSBURGH — Five sports teams from Plattsburgh High School have received recognition from the New York State Public High School Award Association for team academic success this past fall.

Boys' soccer (Chris LaRose, coach; 95.914 grade-point average) — Alex Pierce, Mike Bennett, Ethan Crockett, Frederick Ritter, Jordan Conroy, Brandon Dunham, Drew Wyand, Mack Kilkeary, Joe Shannawi, Ethan Votraw, Seth Fout and Kevin Neiderer. Also receiving recognition for maintaining a 90 percent average was Noah Wolkowicz.

Girls' soccer (Tim Mulligan, coach; 95.000 GPA) — Marne Pike, Emily Higgins, Avery Vilbert, Krissy Flynn, Lauren Grady, Meghan Ryan, Jenelle Carter, Hillary Miller, Melanie Barriere, Chelsea Ensel, Brittany Lareau and Ashley Menard. Also receiving recognition for maintaining a 90 percent average were Emily Schultz, Sarah Carter and Chelsea LaRose.

Girls' swimming (John Ruff, coach; 94.915 GPA) — Rebecca Robbins, Simone Arvisais-Anhalt, Gillian Richardson, Taylor Hall, Kaylee Pobocik, Megan Gadzuk-Shea, Kristen Fisher, Emily Kerr, Katelyn Cross, Kirsten LaMora, and Taylor McMahon, Also receiving recognition for maintaining a 90 percent average were Hannah Saiz, Samantha Waterhouse, Madeline Frechette, Carly Fisher, Brooke Helwig, Kathleen Collins, Olivia Harrigan, Christine Cassone, Kelly Menard, Lauren Malone and Lauren Sherman.

Boys' cross country (Kevin Larkin, coach; 96.354 GPA) — Sam Beguin, Tejinder Gill, Etienne Beguin, Paul Laughlin, Matt Wilson, Alastair Russell and Gus Rietsema.

Keene girls' team earns academic honor
KEENE — The Keene Central girls' soccer team has received the New York State Public High School Athletic Association award for academic success in 2008. The team put together a combined average exceeding 90 percent for the fall soccer season.

Team members include Lindsay LaBarge, Summer Reed, Alicia Ashe, Emma Nye, Megan Ostroski, Kayla Hebert, Jessica Caner, Sadie Holbrook, Anna Kowanko, Caitlyn Reynolds, Alexandra Dumas and Emma Gothner.

Mark LaFountain bowls perfect game
PLATTSBURGH — Mark LaFountain bowled a 300 game Sunday night in the City Mixed League at North Bowl Lanes. He also had games of 256 and 226 for a 782 series. LaFountain carries a 213 average in the league.

Fournier displays hot hand in Malone
MALONE — Brad Fournier has put together an amazing four weeks at Lucky Strike Lanes, highlighted by two perfect games.

Fournier bowled a 297 game in an 801 series in the Men's Gateway League last Wednesday and Monday night, he strung an 832 series with games of 253, 279 and 300. It was his fifth perfect game of the season third career 800 series.

Fournier also broke the Bowling Center record and the Malone USBC Association record, which was held by Dan Black with an 825.

Malone lanes to host Scratch Challenge
MALONE — Lucky Strike Lanes will host the North Country Scratch Challenge Tournament Sunday, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Bowlers will roll five games qualifying and will qualify in two divisions — 40 & over and 39 & under.

One out of three entries in each division will advance with the high qualifier receiving a first-round bye. After the field is cut, bowlers will roll one game and continue until four remain. The final four will bowl a two-game, head-to-head match with each winner bowling a one-game shootout to determine the winner.

First place is $500, based on 50 entries. Entry fee is $50. Brackets and high-game jackpots will be available.

Town of Plattsburgh lists break activities
PLATTSBURGH — The Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department is offering the following programs free to any town resident during the school vacation:

Floor Hockey/Indoor Soccer — Youths ages 10-13 are invited to come and spend a couple of hours getting some much-needed exercise at the Morrisonville School Gym, 1-2:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, 30 and 31. No pre-registration is necessary.

Cross-country skiing/snowshoeing — Sessions will be held at the Cadyville Recreation Park on Goddeau Road, Dec. 22, 23, 29 and 30, from 1-3 p.m. each day. Pre-registration is required for both activities and can be done by calling the Recreation Department at 562-6860 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Equipment will be provided at no cost to those needing it. The caller will need to supply the skier's/snowshoe's height, shoe size and the date of which he or she wishes to ski/snowshoe. Sessions will be filled on a first to call, first to choose the day basis.

Ice skating — Free ice time is available to all town residents — young and old — at the SUNY Plattsburgh Field House on Dec. 29, 30, 31, from 11 a.m.-noon each day. Skate rentals will be available and free of charge.

Archery — Instructional classes will be held for children ages 10-13 at Gander Mountain, from 6-7 p.m. on Dec. 29, 30. Equipment will be provided and it's free. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by calling the Recreation Department at 562-6860.

Saranac lists spring coaching openings
SARANAC — Saranac Central is accepting applications for the following spring coaching positions: varsity, junior-varsity and modified baseball; varsity, junior-varsity and modified softball; boys and girls varsity track & field; varsity tennis and varsity golf.

Parent, Livsey win winter dart tourney
PLATTSBURGH — Chris Parent and John Livsey took first place last week in the Budweiser Winter Dart Tournament at 8 Ball Billiards. The event, offering more than $700 in cash and trophies, drew a field of 64 players.

Parent and Livsey earned $340 while runners-up Randy Ebersole and Josh Williams picked up $220. Garrent Peryer and Jay Dubuque came in third, earning $100, while Fred Parent and Scott Aubin received $15 for fourth place. The top three teams also received trophies.
