Veteran sailor Mike Parsons steers Witchcraft to his first victory in the annual Mayor’s Cup Regatta.

Katie Meserve, Tara Vilardo, Erica Buckley, Erin Provost, Debbie Davis and Casey Gajewski are named to the All-State team for girls’ softball.

Jason Lapham wins 8 of his 10 matches at the National High School Wrestling Championships to place fifth at 112 pounds and earn All-American recognition.

George Stackpole defeats Shane Raymo 6-0, 6-1 to win the North Country Tennis Association Singles title. Ashley Abar captures the women’s title with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Debbie LaPorte

.Gena Rosenbaum’s third goal of the game gives Lady Giroux a 3-3 tie with the Cobble Hill Flames in a battle of women’s soccer unbeatens. Nikki Lopez, Mel Decker and Laura Scruggs score for the Flames.

20 YEARS AGO (1992)

Kyle Watson covers the 6 miles in 34 minutes, 14 seconds to win the 15th Monty-Arto Road Race.

Jesse Lloyd’s 2-run single sends the Kiwanis on to an 11-6 victory over the Rotary in the third and deciding game of the Malone Little League championships. Nathan Spaulding leads the Rotary with a 2-run double.

Don Duval hits a home run and a single in the same inning as Norm Baker & Sons, trailing 12-4 in the bottom of the seventh, puts together 12 straight hits to pull out a 13-12 win over Garceau’s. Scott Baker collects 4 hits and Roy Ebersole, 3, in the comeback victory.

Scott Bell and Beth Schmidt turn in record-setting efforts in the Fifth Annual Westport Fourth of July 4-Miler.

Ryon O’Connell scatters 6 hits and helps his cause with a double as Morrisonville defeats the Malone Moose Americans 7-3 to win the annual Malone Moose All-Star Tournament. Mark Golden and Vince Delaura also had hits for Morrisonville while Ronnie Rockhill led the Americans with 2 hits.

25 YEARS AGO (1987)

Doug Kimbler hits a solo homer and Richie Collins follows with a 3-run shot to power Post 20 to an 8-6 come-from-behind victory over Barre, Vt. in Legion baseball.

Tony Von Elbe sails Going Concern to a 26-second triumph in the one of the closest Mayor’s Cup races in history.

Tim Drollette and Robin Vaughan each belt 2 homers while Glenn Petrashune and Roy Ano add one apiece as the Redford River Rats club the Midas Mudhens 11-7 on their way to a pennant-clinching doubleheader sweep in CVBL play.Darren Phillips scores 3 goals and Neil West, 2, as Little Caesar’s shocks previously unbeaten Chateaugay 7-3 in North Country Soccer League action.

30 YEARS AGO (1982)

Toby Stearns strikes out 16 in pitching the Peru Orioles to a 3-2 win over the South Plattsburgh grasshoppers.

Candy Provost strikes out 13 and drives in 4 runs with 3 hits to lead Cadyville to a 13-4 win over Beekmantown in grasshopper softball.

Dean Rock pitches a no-hitter with 7 strikeouts and helps his cause with 2 RBI in West Plattsburgh’s 15-5 triumph over Saranac-Redford in Pony baseball.

Jim Amorelli pounds out 3 hits to back winning pitcher Robbie Knowles as Pepsi tops Fountain & Lucas 6-4 in Plattsburgh Little League play.

Gloria Trost goes 5-for-6 with a home run to lead The Rook to a 17-7 win over The Dallas Cowgirls in Women’s City Softball action.

Nick Scors goes 4-for-4 while Mark Christian, Mike Doorey and Dennis Menard chip in with 3 hits apiece to lead Red Lyon over VFW 21-6 in Gentlemen’s Slo-Pitch Softball.

40 YEARS AGO (1972)

Danny Votraw pitches a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts to lead the Peru peewees past Saranac-Redford 21-0. Votraw also goes 4-for-4 while Kevin Buckley chips in with 3 hits and Mike James with 2.

Winning pitcher Brian Raville rips a home run and a double to lead the Cumberland Head peewees to a 5-3 triumph over West Plattsburgh. Mike Currier

contributes a double and a single.

Linda Burnell, Tresa Peryea and Sylvia Hebert combine for 7 doubles to lead North Plattsburgh to a 13-12 win over Cliff Haven in Babe Ruth softball.

Tracey Turner, making his first start, tosses a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts as Carrol’s Cubs top Cadyville 5-0 in grasshopper play. Steve Landry

goes 2-for-3 for the Cubs.

50 YEARS AGO (1962)

Lyon Mountain catcher Marshall Dubray signs a professional baseball contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. The 6-foot, 192-pound Dubray is coming off a senior season in which he hit over .400 with 6 home runs.

Mike Lopez tosses a 2-hitter with 12 strikeouts as unbeaten Keeseville downs Morrisonville in Little League play. Terry Allen and Larry Stanley hit home runs.

Gary LaFountain pitches a 2-hitter with 15 strikeouts in South Plattsburgh’s 23-3 win over North Plattsburgh. Mike Gerry belts a homer while Butch Santor and Gary Morehouse each chip in with 3 hits.

Len Rubacha fires a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts as the American Legion defeats GD-A 3-0 in City Softball play. Popcorn Smallacombe homers for the Legion.

Bob Beauchemin pitches a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Joe Burdo goes 3-for-4 to lead Redford to an 18-0 win over Plattsburgh in County Babe Ruth play.

Scott Sumbler picks up 3 hits to lead Plattsburgh Paint over Stone 13-3 in Plattsburgh Little League action.

Wendy Schumacher (English Style), Sue Ellen Botsford (Reserve), Brian Tallon (Pony) and Marsha Willis (Western) earn grand champion honors for most points from four area horse shows.

60 YEARS AGO (1952)

Len Kelly hurls a one-hitter as Scheier’s knocks off previously unbeaten Lido in City Softball. Gary Martineau gets the lone hit for Lido.

post the low gross and net scores.

Rennell pitches a 3-hitter and Tom Robare rips a triple in Keeseville’s 4-3 win over Peru in grasshopper baseball.

Bob Ryan pitches a 2-hitter with 18 strikeouts and Phil O’Connell collects 4 hits, including a grand slam, as Cadyville belts Bloomingdale 12-3 in Adirondack League action.

70 YEARS AGO (1942)

Warren F. Columbe’s Skytop wins the featured event at Saratoga Raceway, picking up $400 in first-place money.

The Plattsburgh playground team is looking for games. Joe Bernard is the team captain with L. Bernard, H. Racicot, J. Seymour, G. Doucette, W. Lepage, J. McGavisk, E. Riel, G. Riel, G. Garrow, J. McGaulley, M. Rockwell, L. Bourdeau and D. Welch rounding out the squad.
