Gonyea named to All-District team

PLATTSBURGH — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Soccer Teams Thursday, with senior Lauren Gonyea of the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team receiving Academic All-District III First Team honors.

Hailing from Plattsburgh, Gonyea possesses a 3.92 grade point average in chemistry education and is the fifth Plattsburgh State women’s soccer player to earn Academic All-District Honors and the first since 2009.

Gonyea, the only representative of the SUNY Athletic Conference on the All-District III First Team, was one of just two players who started all 18 games for the Cardinals in 2013 and totaled three goals and one assist in her final year as a collegian.

The three-time team captain amassed seven goals and four assists through 70 games played. In 2010, she helped the Cardinals to a runner-up finish in the SUNYAC Tournament before making an appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Capital One Academic All-District Soccer Teams are selected annually by CoSIDA, recognizing the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

District III includes all NCAA Division III schools in the state of New York. As an Academic All-District selection, Gonyea will now advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
