---- — PLATTSBURGH — A disappointing and frustrating season in SUNY Athletic Conference play ended in another one-goal loss for the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team on Saturday.
Alexa Vojvodic’s goal early in the second half broke a 1-all tie and helped send Geneseo to a 3-2 victory at the Field House Soccer Complex.
The Knights (6-6-4, 4-3-2) now advance to the SUNYAC Tournament as the sixth seed, while the Cardinals (4-11-2, 2-6-1) will close out their season with a 3 p.m. nonconference game at Norwich University on Tuesday.
Five of the six Plattsburgh losses in conference play this season were by one goal.
Geneseo held a 1-0 lead at the half when Laurie Knapp beat a Plattsburgh defender on the right side and slipped the ball into the near side of the net at the 6:04 mark.
It stayed that way until the Cardinals drew even with 7:37 gone in the second half. Diana DiCocco tallied her team-leading fourth goal, beating Geneseo keeper Julia Sanger low on the left side.
The tie, however, didn’t last long.
Alexa Krebs’ free kick from the side resulted in a perfectly-placed header by Vojvodic, tucked high into the near side of the net, at the 11:25 mark.
Then, at 19:05, Erin O’Connor was able to get past the Plattsburgh defense and chipped the ball over Cardinal keeper Kristy Kirkpatrick’s head for a 3-1 Geneseo lead.
Plattsburgh did get back to within a goal with 4:12 left in regulation when Devin McMahon’s low shot skimmed along the wet turf, between the legs of Sanger and into the net.
The Cardinals finished with a 23-13 shot advantage and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Sanger turned away seven shots for the Knights and Kirkpatrick ended up with four saves for Plattsburgh.
It was Senior Day for the Cardinals, with Emily LaLone and Lauren Gonyea playing in their final home games for Plattsburgh.
