PSU men defeat Geneseo, claim fourth seed

GENESEO — The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team bounced back from Friday’s loss at The College of Brockport by closing out its SUNY Athletic Conference regular season with a 3-0 victory at Geneseo on Saturday.

The Cardinals (12-4-1, 6-3) will host Buffalo State at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Field House Soccer Complex in the SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Plattsburgh goes in as the fourth seed and Buffalo State the fifth seed. The two met recently on October 18 in Plattsburgh and the Cardinals, after failing to hold a 2-0 lead, emerged with a 3-2 overtime victory.

“We’ll take it one game at a time,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury said. “We had some players out the first time we played Buffalo State and we’re glad to have them back now. We’ll be ready to play.”

Plattsburgh will first close out regular season play with a 3 p.m. nonconference game at powerful St. Lawrence University on Wednesday.

The Plattsburgh/Geneseo game was scoreless until Matt Hamilton gave the Cardinals the lead with a penalty kick at the 23:15 mark of the first half.

Two minutes later, at 25:15, disaster struck for the Knights when Plattsburgh went up by a 2-0 margin on an own goal.

“It was a tough day to play and the field was soft,” Waterbury said. “We did a good job adjusting to the conditions.

“On our second goal, Tom Greene went down the flank to the end line where he crossed the ball in front to Nick Parrella. The defender tried to get to the ball first and it went off him and into the net. The goal was the result of some good work by Greene and Parrella.”

Alexis Archilla then finished off the Plattsburgh scoring with an unassisted goal with 5:51 gone in the second half.

“It was an absolute cannon,” Waterbury said. “He (Archilla) just crushed the shot that went upper 90.”
