CHAZY — Jack Tolosky buried the overtime game-winning goal to lift third-seeded Plattsburgh past second-seeded Saranac Lake 2-1 in Section VII Class B boys’ soccer Friday.
Tolosky and the Hornets bested the Red Storm for the third time this season as Plattsburgh ensures itself a sectional championship appearance.
The Hornets move into next Friday’s title game against Beekmantown, a 2-0 winner over Northeastern Clinton, at 7 p.m. in Chazy.
Saranac Lake came out strong offensively, highlighted by Aaron Noel’s breakaway opportunity that he sent wide left of the net. Plattsburgh settled in and both teams traded scoring chances.
The Hornets struck first when Garrett Frady picked up the loose ball in the box off a corner kick and booted it to score 31 minutes into the game. Jacob Bushey earned an assist on the tally.
Not to be outdone, the Red Storm evened up the match after Devin Cowan scored on the second of two rebounds with just under two minutes left in the first half.
After playing to a scoreless second half, the teams entered overtime.
On an offensive drive downfield, Tolosky dribbled into the box and fired a shot from the left side that sneaked through the Saranac Lake defense and a diving goalkeeper. The goal was his second of the season and backed up a total team effort shown by the Hornets, Plattsburgh coach Chris LaRose said.
“All of our guys stepped up (Friday),” LaRose said. “Against this team, we stressed that we needed to possess the ball because of Saranac Lake’s quickness. Our guys held the ball and made the right plays when they needed to.”
Plattsburgh played the game with newly-appointed goalkeeper Taoufik Maknani after starting keeper Mike Stetz was ruled out with a concussion. Maknani stopped seven shots while his Red Storm counterpart Oliver Holmes made 10 saves.
