---- — BUFFALO — The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team did everything but win Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals outshot host Buffalo State 12-6 and had the edge in play, only to drop a 2-1 decision in SUNY Athletic Conference play.
Jordan Dudish’s 28-yard free kick at 4:44 of the first overtime provided the margin of difference for the Bengals (9-4-1, 5-1), who have lost just once in the conference regular season.
The loss dropped the Cardinals to 4-8-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.
“I felt we dominated in all facets of the game,” Plattsburgh coach Karen Waterbury said. “It was unfortunate to lose at the end.
“I was pleased with our effort and attitude. I feel that we’re playing real well right now and are so much better than our record would indicate.”
Megan Chapple redirected Lauren Delaney’s cross into the net at 37:32 of the first half to give Buffalo State the lead.
It stayed that way until 4:28 remained in regulation when Plattsburgh’s Emily LaLone got the ball to Diana DiCocco, who split through the Buffalo State defense and forced overtime.
“I felt we were carrying the play, even though we were behind at the half,” Waterbury said. “Everyone was playing well.
“We kept battling and then had the momentum on our side going into the overtime after we scored to tie it. We were playing with confidence, and being in overtime wasn’t new for us.”
But any chance for a Plattsburgh upset was ended on Dudish’s free kick.
“We weren’t able to clear the ball and had an unfortunate foul,” Waterbury said. “The player who took the free kick for them strikes the ball well.
“But the shot went over our defense and our goalie wasn’t able to make the save on it. We had only one save and let in two goals. That can’t happen if we expect to win games.”
Linda Banfield turned away seven shots in the Buffalo State nets, and Kristy Kirkpatrick made one stop for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will continue their weekend on the road today at Fredonia. The Blue Devils recorded a 3-0 victory over Potsdam State on Friday.
