Malone girls step up pace

ROCHESTER — The Franklin Academy girls outran 28 teams from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ontario and Western New York Saturday to win their division in the 49th McQuaid Invitational at Genesee Valley Park.

Malone finished with 82 points to easily defeat runner-up Hamburg, with 133, and Lakewood, Ohio, with 138, in the Girls’ Unseeded Varsity AA-2 Division for Medium/Large Schools.

“I knew we could get in the top three in our race, but to come in first and beat the second-place team by 51 points was a surprise,” FA Coach Jeff Soper said..

“It was a strong showing for our top 5 runners who all placed in the top 31 runners in the race.

“The official merged results for the entire day have not been released but based on schools’ average top 5 runner times we should place 18th out of all 57 Girls varsity teams. We averaged 19:26 for our top 5 runners and reduced our 1-5 time differential to 84 seconds.”

Brockport’s Autumn Albrecht led the way in the field of 219 runners with a time of 18:02. Malone’s Bekkah Bond placed fifth in 18:41 while Carrie Pomainville came in eighth in 18:56.

Emily Pomainville was 17th (19:28), followed by Madeleine Champagne, 29 (20:00); Morgan Bronner, 31 (20:05); Rinn Schanck, 90 (21:37); and Allyson Hyde, 116 (22:06).

Also competing were: 127. Brooke Bronner, 127 (22:21); Sarah-Margaret Cowart, 130 (22:23); and Annika Campbell, 144 (22:44).
