Mihal sends Plattsburgh over No. 18 Saranac Lake in boys' NSL

SARANAC LAKE — The Plattsburgh High boys’ soccer team couldn’t have asked for a better way to start its game Tuesday.

Garrett Frady opened scoring with just 1:58 gone, while Dan Mihal added the eventual game-winning goal in the second half as the Hornets (4-3) upset No. 18 Saranac Lake in Northern Soccer League play, 2-1.

“They were hungrier at the start of the game than we were,” Red Storm (5-1-1) coach Joshua Marlow said. “I thought they did a nice job in the first half of controlling the game with their passes.”

Frady scored an early goal off a bar down rebound with less than two minutes gone by.

Brady Channell registered the assist.

Forty-three minutes later, Saranac Lake got on the board after an own goal at 4:58.

With the match tied at 1-all, Dan Mihal sent home a shot at 9:12 to help Plattsburgh High knock off the previously unbeaten Red Storm.

“I thought that we really put the pressure on in the second half, but it was one half too late,” Marlow said. “It was a great game for the fans and a stressful one for the coaches. Both teams had good looks at the net.

“Aaron Noel and Logan Wood played well for the Red Storm as did forward Devin Cowan. Shawn Snyder added valuable plays in limited time off the Saranac Lake bench.”

Yanis Yahiaui was credited with the assist on Mihal’s goal.

Mike Stetz collected the win between the pipes for the Hornets, registering six saves.

Liam Chaskey, John Fine-Lease and Ryan Whalen all played well on defense, while Frady played a great game for the Plattsburgh High offense, according to Marlow.
