---- — Cards’ Damm, Gehring honored

CORTLAND — After another successful week on the field, Plattsburgh State lacrosse players Brendan Damm and Gordie Gehring each received weekly honors from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

Damm, a freshman, was named the SUNYAC Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after tallying five points in a 14-2 win in the Cardinals’ home opener last Wednesday night against Norwich. The Montauk, N.Y., product scored his first goal of the day at the 6:41 mark of the first quarter and added an assist in the second. He tacked on three more goals in the fourth quarter. Damm also was tied for a game-high five ground balls and led Plattsburgh State with eight shots on goal.

A senior netminder, Gehring received SUNYAC Men’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week accolades for the second time in his career after taking a shutout into the 54th minute of Wednesday’s non-conference game against the Cadets. The native of Jamesville, N.Y., allowed one goal and made seven saves in the 14-2 win, improving his record to 4-0 on the year.

Another Wednesday night showdown is on tap for the Cardinals (4-0), who are receiving votes in the latest USILA Division III Coaches Poll. Morrisville State (0-2) will make the trip to the Field House Lacrosse Complex to take on Plattsburgh State. The non-conference tilt is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Doorey to appear at Coaches Corner Series

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State athletics department, in conjunction with the Ground Round Grill & Bar, will host its fifth Coaches Corner event on Wednesday, March 13, 2013. The event is free and open to the public.

From 5-7 p.m., Plattsburgh State baseball coach Kris Doorey will be on hand at the Ground Round to mingle with fans and answer questions about the 2012-13 season.

In his 12th year at the helm of Plattsburgh State’s baseball program, Doorey is coming off a 2012 campaign that saw him capture his second SUNYAC Coach of the Year award. Last year’s squad went 22-17 and finished in a tie for third place in the SUNYAC standings.

Plattsburgh State opened up its 2013 season on Sunday at Farmingdale State as part of the SUNYAC/Skyline Challenge. The Cardinals dropped a pair of decisions to the Rams by scores of 9-4 and 1-0.

America’s Boating Course to be offered

PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, in conjunction with the Center for Community and Workforce Development at Clinton Community College, is offering “America’s Boating Course”, a course in basic boating safety.

The course will be offered at Clinton Community College from 5:30- 9:30 p.m., on Wednesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 27.

This course meets state specific and National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) requirements for certification and completion of the course is accepted by most insurance companies for a reduction in the cost of boat insurance. The course will satisfy the New York State requirement for PWC operation and also the State of Vermont law that specifies that anyone born after January 1, 1974 must have completed a NASBLA approved course to operate any type of motorized vessel in Vermont waters on Lake Champlain.

As all US Power Squadron instructors are volunteers there is no charge for the course. However, there is a charge of $35 for the textbook and course materials which can be purchased from the instructor. A reduced rate of $45 is available for two family members who wish to share a book.

In conjunction with the Plattsburgh Boat and RV Show which is being held at the Crete Center in Plattsburgh on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 the Champlain Sail and Power Squadron is offering a Boat Show Special. A discount coupon will be available at the Boat Show, from Power Squadron Members or at local marinas for a $5.00 off the cost of course materials.

Stick-puck, public skating sessions set

PLATTSBURGH — Ameri-Can North Sports Center will be open for stick-n-puck on Friday, from 7:30-9 p.m., and for public skating, on Saturday, from 3:30-5 p.m.

Schroon Lake holds ice-fishing derby

SCHROON LAKE — More than 550 anglers took part in the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club’s annual ice-fishing derby held March 2-3.

The winners of the two day derby are:

▶ Lake trout — 1st place, Rick Scholl (11.4 lbs., 34 in.); 2nd place, Steven Barnaby (9.99 lbs., 31 in.); 3rd place, Caleb Meade (6.9 lbs., 29 in.).

▶ Northern pike — 1st place, Jeremiah Millington (14.9 lbs., 39 in.); 2nd place, Chris Clarke (12.1 lbs., 36 in.); 3rd place, Rob Parks (11.5 lbs., 34.5 in.)

▶ Salmon — 1st place, Ed Harrington (4.6 lbs., 24.5 in.); 2nd place, Jason D’Angelo (4.3 lbs., 25 in.); 3rd place, Louis Galarza (3.8 lbs., 22.5 in.)

▶ Largest Perch — Joe Knizek (1.9 lbs., 15.5 in.).

▶ Largest Pickerel. — Stacy Pruesser (4.8 lbs., 26.5 in.).
