Ryan's 25 leads Eagles over Indians

PERU — A 21-7 first-quarter run was the difference Friday night as the Beekmantown girls’ basketball team recorded a 57-45 victory over Peru in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.

Shannon Ryan poured in 25 points for the Eagles, while Grace Kelly added 11 and Emily Anderson, 10.

Mary Mazzella and Sam Martin finished with 11 points each for the Indians and Brianna Hackett added nine. Martin added 10 rebounds, Meghan Mazzella seven rebounds and Mary Mazzella, five steals.

“They came out and shot the ball well in the first quarter,” said Peru coach David Baroody. “They led by as many as 20 points in the first half.

“But our full-court pressure helped us come back in the second half. We had it down to seven points midway through the fourth. The girls battled.”

Sophomore guard Tori Trim led a balanced attack with nine points, while teammates Kayla Napper, Summer Gillespie and Kaitlyn Bowman chipped in for eight markers each in the win.

“Defensively, we played well and it led to solid transition play,” Saranac coach Tim Newell said. “Northeastern Clinton played zone early and we moved the ball. Our team is extremely unselfish. We’re getting great leadership from our seniors and the sophomores are contributing.”
