---- — Depo, Schermerhorn reach NCAAs

INDIANAPOLIS — After some great performances throughout their respective outdoor track & field seasons, seniors Ben Depo and Amanda Schermerhorn found out they will have one final meet to compete in before their collegiate careers come to a close.

The pair will represent Plattsburgh State at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Thursday.

Schermerhorn, who hails from Scotia, will be competing in the outdoor championships for the first time in her career. She earned the 16th seed in the 1,500-meter run by way of her school-record performance at the SUNYAC Championships back on May 4.

Her runner-up time of 4:33.90 in the race broke a school record that had been standing for nearly a quarter century and ensured her a spot on the All-SUNYAC Second Team. The senior will line up in the starting blocks at the championships and compete among the nation’s best at roughly 5:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

No stranger to excelling in the decathlon, Depo earned his first-ever berth to the national meet by earning the 19th seed with point tally of 6,277. That total occurred at the Cortland Classic back on April 20 when Depo put together a first-place finish at the event.

At the SUNYAC Championships, Depo took home his third individual title in the decathlon en route to being named the SUNYAC’s Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Year. With his first-place point tally of 6,176 points, he was also named to the All-SUNYAC First Team.

Depo will make a run at the national title over the course of two days. The first five events of the decathlon begin at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday while the second quintet of events will occur at 3 p.m. on Friday.
