Burns no-hits A's at Left Wilson

---- — PLATTSBURGH — It was a shorter day for Brian Burns Sunday.

The former Plattsburgh State standout pitched a five-inning, no-hitter in the Fourth Ward A’s 10-0 win over the Meron’s Expos in Champlain Valley Baseball League play at Lefty Wilson Field.

In the first game, Billy Davis tossed a four-hitter in the Expos’ 8-1 victory.

Burns, who struck out 17 in eight innings last Sunday, fanned seven and walked two.

Casey Brighton, his catcher at Plattsburgh State, went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs. Pat Shaughnessy and Brian Elliott added two hits each, with Elliott getting a home run and three RBI.

Tyler Greene started and took the loss for the Expos, who dropped their first game of the season following three wins.

In the opener, Davis struck out seven in going the distance for the win. Joe Kirkpatrick took the loss.

Chris Roenbeck paced Meron’s offensively with a home run and double, while Glenn Engstrom added two hits and Chris Pescetti a double. The Expos jumped in front with four runs in the first inning.

Shaughnessy rapped a double for the A’s and Jake Tolosky drove in his team’s lone run of the game.

LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Miners scored six runs in the seventh inning to pull away to a win in the first game.

The Fourth Ward Cardinals then jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the second contest and held on for a split on the day.

In the opener, winning pitcher David Waldron and Justin Besaw, who took over in the sixth inning, combined on a two-hitter.

Kyle Kowalowski, Scott Baker, Kris Chase and Kasey Favreau led the Miners with two hits apiece, with Favreau getting two doubles and Kowalowski a double and two RBI. Ben Weightman also doubled.

Joe Tolosky rapped a double and losing pitcher Alex LaFountain a single for the lone Cardinal hits.

In the nightcap, Jack Tolosky paced the Cardinals with three hits, while Will Flynn, Joe Tolosky, winning pitcher Tom Neale and LaFountain added two apiece. Joe Tolosky had two doubles and two RBI and Neale a double. Tom Curran also doubled.

Luke Weaver paced the Miners, who lost for the first time this season, with three hits, followed by Favreau and Reilly Lawless with two each.

The Miners scored four runs in the sixth to pull to within 9-8.

PLATTSBURGH — Matt Rivers pitched a five-inning shutout in the first game for the Peabody’s Padres and D.J. DeJesus scattered seven hits in the second contest to help the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx get a split of a twinbill at South Acres Field.

In the opener, Shane Perrotte, Nick Desroches, Matt Hart, Eric Bell and Chris Markwica all rapped out two hits each for the Padres, with Desroches pounding out two home runs, including a grand slam and six RBI. Hart and Markwica also homered.

The Padres broke a scoreless game with eight runs in the third inning.

Josh Chapman and losing pitcher Russell Merrill led the Timberjaxx with two hits each, with Merrill getting a double.

In the second game, Justin Mahan paced the Timberjaxx with a double and two singles, while Aaron Goldfarb and Merrill chipped in with two hits apiece. The Timberjaxx broke a 2-all tie with two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good.

Andrew Petro was the lone Padres’ player to get two hits. Jeff Norton was the losing pitcher.
