Miners sweep to CVBL pennant


---- — LYON MOUNTAIN — The Lyon Mountain Miners made short work of the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx on Sunday and wrapped up the regular-season championship in the Champlain Valley Baseball League.

The Miners (10-2) needed only five innings in each game for an 11-1 and 15-3 sweep.

In the first game, Lyon Mountain was led offensively by Tory Bouyea with two doubles and a single, Kyle Kowalowski a single and triple, Reilly Lawless a double and single, and Justin Besaw a triple.

David Waldron allowed three hits and went the five innings to improve his season pitching record to 6-0. All three hits came in the first and were singles by Austin Bradish, Aaron Goldfarb and Andrew Price.

In the second game, the Miners held a 5-1 lead when they scored 10 runs in the fourth.

Scott Baker rapped out three hits and drove in three runs for Lyon Mountain, while Lawless added a home run, single and two RBI, Bouyea two hits and Kyle Kowalowski a triple.

Winning pitcher Justin Besaw took a no-hitter into the fifth when he allowed a leadoff single to Jimmy Knight. Goldfarb then rapped a two-run single later in the inning for the Timberjaxx (3-10).

CARDINAL 3, A’s 0A’s 4, CARDINALS 2 (8)

PLATTSBURGH — Winning pitcher Tom Neale struck out 11 and went six scoreless innings in the opener. Joe Kirkpatrick took the loss.

Alex LaFountain rapped an RBI single in the second inning for the Fourth Ward Cardinals, Frank Buksa an RBI double in the third, and Buksa scored on an error in the fifth.

Joe Tolosky and Nate Durkee also doubled for the Cardinals.

Brian Elliot paced the Fourth Ward A’s with three hits. The frustrated A’s left 12 runners on base.

In the second game, the Cardinals (7-6) rallied from a 2-0 deficit with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings.

But Matt Meunier doubled in two runs in the eighth to break a 2-all tie and give the A’s the victory. Meunier had two hits and drove in three runs, while Michael Howard added two singles.

Brian Burns fanned 10 and went the eight innings to get the win for the A’s (6-7). Alex LaFountain pitched 7.1 innings in taking the setback.

Buksa paced the Cardinals with two hits and Durkee doubled. C.J. Worley drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Neale’s RBI single plated another.

SARANAC — The Meron’s Expos (7-5) edged out a win in the opener and then rolled past the Peabody’s Padres (5-8) in the nightcap.

Glenn Engstrom, Cliff Conners and Blake Gautreau rapped out two hits each for Meron’s in the first game.

The Expos were down, 4-1, when they scored three runs in the sixth on Conners’ RBI single and Gautreau’s two-run single. The game-winning run came in the seventh when winning pitcher Billy Davis singled and Engstrom rapped a RBI double.

Kalob Drollette, Shane Perrotte, Jeff Norton and Mark Eggleston paced the Padres with two hits apiece, with Perrotte getting a two-run single.

In the second contest, Davis accounted for a triple, double and two singles in support of winning pitcher Mike Bergman, who blanked the Padres from the second inning on.

Jordan Woods added three hits for Meron’s, while Paul Bruno, Engstrom and Conners were next with two hits each.

Chris Markwica drove in both Peabody’s runs with a two-run single in the first inning.
