Carter's 40 sends Clinton past North Country

SARANAC LAKE — Sharpshooter Bayron Carter has been Clinton Community College’s leading scorer all season, but Wednesday he outdid himself.

Carter drained 10 3-pointers and totaled 40 points, helping the Cougars overcome a sloppy first half and beat North Country Community College 82-60 in men’s basketball.

“Amazing shooting performance,” Clinton coach Kevin Daugherty said, adding that Carter hit his first eight attempts from behind the arc. “He has deep range. He’s not afraid to put it up.”

Clinton (17-5, 14-5) led by nine at halftime.

“If (Carter) hadn’t shot like he did in first half, we would’ve been down,” Daugherty said. “They outplayed us. We turned the basketball over way too much in the first half.”

Daugherty said the Cougars took better care of the ball in the second half and got strong play from Mykelle Krecko and Kyree Hull. Krecko finished with a triple-double: 12 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks. Hull, who presented a match-up problem for the Saints, had 17 points and five steals.

Tom Ryan pulled down nine rebounds, and Jamie Davison handed out nine assists.

Clinton built a big lead in the second half, but North Country came back.

“The kids played extremely well. They fought back to get it within four with 12 minutes left,” North Country coach Chad LaDue said. “That is an outstanding basketball team we played (Wednesday). They have a chance to do really well as the season goes on.

“We have to keep working and work our way into the regionals.”

Daniel Trentsch led the Saints with 16 points.
