PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College men’s basketball team needed to be on top of its game this past weekend against two quality opponents.
The Cougars weren’t, however.
Mohawk Valley Community College avenged an earlier loss to Clinton with an 80-71 decision on Sunday.
The Cougars (16-5, 13-5) went 0-2 over the weekend, including Saturday’s 74-66 setback to No. 8-ranked SUNY Delhi.
“These were both very good teams, but it’s tough to lose two games at home,” Clinton coach Kevin Daugherty said.
“I was happy with our effort, but we weren’t on top of our game.”
Five Mohawk Valley players hit in double figures, led by Shaquille Mosley’s 19 points and five 3-pointers. Lamel Faison was next with 17 points, followed by Shawn Branch 11 and both Phil Carr and Lazaro Martinez 10 apiece.
Kyree Hull poured in 27 points to lead the Cougars and grabbed eight rebounds. Charles Grant added 17 points, Mykelle Krecko 15 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks and Jamie Davison, seven assists.
Clinton had to make due without leading scorer Bayron Carter, who was injured the day before.
“It’s tough giving up Carter’s 20 points a game,” Daugherty said. “But Mohawk Valley played real well.”
The Hawks took a 36-29 halftime lead.
“We struggled to get into an offensive flow,” Daugherty said. “Hull was able to keep us in the game — he really battled.”
The Cougars made a couple of runs in the second half, but to no avail.
“We looked like we were going on one run in the second half, but Krecko picked up his fourth foul.” Daugherty said. “That happened with 13 minutes left and we had to sit him until the 6-minute mark.
“They went up by as many as 17 points. We then battled defensively and cut it down to nine. But that was close as we could get it. Grant scored15 of his 17 points in the second half.”
The Cougars return to the court on Wednesday night with a 7 p.m. contest at rival North Country Community College.
