After special pep talk, Blue Bombers tie Potsdam

LAKE PLACID — Jayde Dukette’s second goal of the game, with 3:41 left in regulation, lifted Lake Placid to a 2-2 overtime tie with Potsdam in girls’ hockey Thursday.

The contest was scoreless for half the game until Dukette gave the Blue Bombers the lead at 7:59 of the second period with Lizzie Bimonte and Kiana Fell assisting.

The Sandstoners, however, used special teams to rally into a 2-1 advantage after two.

Ally Miller tallied a power-play goal at 10:46, and then Megan Plumb put Potsdam ahead with a short-handed goal with just 27 seconds left in the stanza.

The Sandstoners maintained the lead until Morgan Meyer assisted on Dukette’s game-tying marker.

Potsdam finished with a 31-23 shot advantage, with Tanner Stanton making 29 saves for the Blue Bombers and Allie Compteau 21 stops for the Sandstoners.

“This was our senior game, and our two senior captains, Emily Godin and Alexa Whitney, had an excellent night,” Lake Placid coach Sandy Huber said. “Jayde Dukette also played especially well. She was focused, aggressive and her shooting was great.

“Jayde and the rest of the team were inspired by some special guests who spoke to us before the game. Buzz Schneider and John Harrington, from the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, happened to be in the 1980 rink for another event. I asked them if they would give us a pep talk and they gladly did. Mr. Harrington even passed his gold medal around.

“We knew this was going to be a tough game.”
