Dannemora K of C free throw contest on Sunday
REDFORD — The Dannemora Knights of Columbus Council #2166 will hold its annual free throw shooting contest at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Assumpion of Mary School in Redford. The doors will open at noon for practice.
Boys and girls ages nine through 14 are eligible to participate. Winners will receive trophies and will advance on in the state-wide competition. For more information, contact Ed Liberty, at 293-6671.
Rabideau claims Green Jacket
PLATTSBURGH — The winner of the coveted Green Jacket for the 2013 American Legion post 1619 “Big Buck” contest was Alvin Rabideau at 192 pounds and eight points.
Randy Bedard grabbed the runner-up spot at 188 pounds and nine points. Richard Chase concluded the podium at 171 pounds and eight points.
The “Big Buck Bow” went to Scott Baker at 150 pounds and four points. The “Big Doe Bow” was awarded to Jared Higgins at 99 pounds.
Randy Rock collected the “Big Buck Muzzle Loader” at 149 pounds and eight points. Jeremy Favro and Gary Baker each tied for the “Big Doe Muzzle Loader” at 120 pounds.
Bill Noel (191 pounds), Steve Petrashune (114 pounds) and Al Goddeau (95 pounds) finished 1-2-3 in “Biggest Bear.”
The event had 162 entries.
Cadieux honored as SUNYAC men’s hockey Goalie of the Week
CORTLAND — Mathieu Cadieux of the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team has been selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Goalie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 19.
Cadieux went 2-1 in a week of nonconference games on the road for Plattsburgh. On Tuesday at nationally-ranked No. 5 Norwich, the Oshawa, Ont., native allowed two goals and made 26 saves in a 4-2 win for Plattsburgh. Cadieux picked up his second win of the week at Middlebury in a 4-2 win Friday, stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced. Cadieux wrapped up his week Saturday evening with 16 saves in a loss at then-ranked No. 12 Williams College.
The Cardinals’ senior goaltender combined for 70 saves on the week with a .909 save percentage to earn his second SUNYAC weekly honor of the season. Cadieux is 13-2-2 on the year and ranks fifth in Division III with a 1.46 goals-against average.
Plattsburgh begins the second half of its SUNYAC schedule Friday as the Cardinals travel to Potsdam. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Carpenter, Bushey compete in soccer
HANDOVER. Mass. — Ashley Carpenter (Seton Catholic) and Lindsey Bushey (Peru Central), along with their Vermont U18 Far-Post premier soccer team, competed this past weekend at the University Sports complex in Handover Mass. for the US Youth Northeast Regional Futsal Championship.
Their team went 4-0 to win the championship and receive an automatic bid to the 2014 US Youth Futsal National Championship in Gardner, Kansas. The U18 Far Post outscored their opponents, 34-10, in the regional tournament. Futsal is the only “Official form of Indoor Soccer” as approved by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). It is played on all the continents of the world by more than 100 countries with 12 million registered players and growing. Futsal is normally played on sport court or a gymnasium floor.
Clinton C.C. men’s basketball team ranked 11th
PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College men’s basketball team is ranked 11th this week in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll.
The Cougars upset Mohawk Valley Community College, ranked ninth in the country, over the weekend and also defeated Jefferson Community College.
Six-point week gives VanGlahn ECAC West honors
CENTERVILLE, Mass. — Chelsea VanGlah,n of the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team, has been selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 19.
VanGlahn tallied six points in a 3-0 week for the top-ranked Cardinals. On Tuesday, VanGlahn chipped in the primary assist on a power-play goal in a 4-1 win at Williams. In an 8-0 victory over Cortland on Friday, she netted Plattsburgh State’s first goal with just 1:21 gone in the game before adding an assist in the third period.
The Cardinals’ senior co-captain wrapped up the weekend with her second career hat trick, which included the game-winning goal and a short-handed goal in Saturday’s 10-1 win over Cortland. The honor is VanGlahn’s first of the 2013-14 season and the second of her career.
Plattsburgh State returns to action this weekend with a pair of ECAC West Division games at Utica. Friday’s game is set for 7 p.m. before the series wraps up on Saturday with a 3 p.m. puck drop.
Rod & gun club indoor range open on Saturday
PLATTSBURGH — The indoor rifle & pistol range at the Plattsburgh Rod & Gun Club will be open on Saturday for public shooting at 1 p.m. The range is open Monday through Friday at night.
