Boyea leads North Country to victory

SARANAC LAKE — The North Country Community College men’s basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat Columbia-Greene Community College 72-61 Monday.

“To be honest, it was a weird game,” Saints (9-8) coach Chad LaDue said. “With no game played before us, it was a 4 p.m. game on a Monday. Let’s just say, if people weren’t at work, they weren’t here. With maybe 50 people in attendance, the gym didn’t have any intensity.

“We kind of went through the motions in the first half, and it was kind of a flat game. It’s like I told my assistant coaches, ‘It’s like we’re playing in a swimming pool.’”

North Country, maintaining a six-point lead at halftime, came out much better in the second half. The Saints managed to outscore the Twins (4-15) by a five-point margin to secure the 11-point-victory.

“Anytime you can get a win, it’s a good day,” LaDue said. “We were pleased we were able to do just that. Some guys came off the bench and played pretty well.

“Srdjan Grcic had three 3-pointers for us off the bench. Jonathan Dunlavey really set the tone in the second half, rebounding the basketball and playing pretty well.”

Michael Boyea paced North Country with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Thomas Barnes was the second and final member of the Saints to record double figures, adding 11 points.

“Michael’s our leader,” LaDue said. “When we need something, he usually comes through for us. He had a much better second half, scoring 14 of his 18.

“We’re just happy with the win, but it gets much harder. We travel to Herkimer County Community College Wednesday. They’re ranked No. 9 in the country.”
