---- — PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State baseball team will not be going to the SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament this season.
But, that doesn’t mean the Cardinals’ remaining schedule isn’t important.
Plattsburgh jumped out to a 7-1 lead Tuesday afternoon and defeated Skidmore College, 8-4, in non-conference play at Chip Cummings Field.
“We’re still playing to win,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said. “It’s a great experience for our younger players — we started eight freshmen and sophomores today.
“We’ll continue to use our games as a learning experience. We played small ball today when we had the opportunity and made some productive outs by moving runners along. It’s important that we learn how to win. We have a lot of guys who don’t know how to win (on a college level) yet.”
The Cardinals scored two runs in the second and three in the third for a 5-1 lead. Plattsburgh held a 7-1 advantage in the seventh when the bullpen struggled and allowed three runs.
Brian Burns went the first five innings to get the pitching win. Burns, who improved his season record to 5-2, surrendered five hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out five.
“Brian gave us a good start and pitched well,” Doorey said.
The Cardinals (10-20) finished with 12 hits in all. Shane Houppert, Chris Pescetti, Mat Chavez and Nicholas Lupo rapped out two hits apiece. Pescetti drove in two runs, while Houppert and Chevez each scored two runs.
“Pescetti continues to swing a good bat,” Doorey said. “And Lupo has taken advantage of his opportunity to play and did a good job both offensively and defensively for us today.”
The Thoroughbreds (11-17) were led offensively by Chris Lorenz with three hits. Skidmore totaled 13 hits, with Marco Baratta, Leejay Pollacchi, Nick Barra and Jake Dougherty accounting for two each. Pollacchi drove in three of his team’s runs.
“Skidmore’s record in deceiving,” Doorey said. “They have some good players.”
Former Saranac Central School standout Jordan Keysor, a senior and one of Skidmore’s conference pitchers, worked the eighth inning.
The Cardinals host Union College in a 4 p.m. today in another non-conference game.
