Millar wins 5,000 at Upstate Track & Field Classic

TROY — Ryan Millar ran to a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the Upstate Track and Field Classic on the campus of RPI Saturday. Millar was the sole member of the Plattsburgh State men’s outdoor track and field team to earn a first-place finish at the meet.

His time of 15:35.69 was almost five seconds better than his nearest competition. Chris Martin joined Millar as a top-three finisher in the race as he posted a time of 15:54.48, which was good for third place.

One week removed from posting an ECAC-qualifying time in the 10,000-meter run, Mike Schram posted a runner-up finish in the 3,000.

The Tupper Lake native turned in a time of 8:58.02 and was less than six seconds off the pace set by the leader.

Zach Rose was the only Plattsburgh athlete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and he put forth a seventh-place performance as he traversed the course in a time of 11:15.20.

Six Cardinals were in the 34-person field of the 800, and Evan Greenberg was the only one to crack the top 10. Greenberg posted a 10th-place finish in a time of 2:00.95. Trevor Kent was among the top 15 finishers as he turned in a time of 2:02.58 — good enough for 14th place.

Luke Potash came up with a good performance in the 400, taking third place with a time of 51.57 seconds. He missed qualifying for the ECAC meet by a little less than one-and-a-half seconds.

Program newcomer Bob Smith joined Potash among the field and finished 19th in a time of 56.37 seconds.

In the 400 hurdles, Esa Jessop sprinted to a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:01.10 in the eight-person field.

The 1,600 relay team of Kent, John Hamilton, Dylan Hedderman and Christian Whalen grabbed fifth place in 3:38.20.

Brian Drollette captured a spot in the top 10 in the 200 by posting a 10th-place time of 23.34 seconds.
