Ryan named Rookie of the Week

ROCHESTER — Freshman Keegan Ryan of the St. John Fisher College men’s basketball team was named Rookie of the Week in the Empire 8.

Ryan, a graduate of Beekmantown, helped lead the Cardinals to two wins last week en route to a third-place finish at the 48th annual Wendy’s College Classic, earning him a spot on the All-Classic Second Team.

He posted 16 points and seven rebounds in Fisher’s 87-79 win against SUNY Geneseo in opening round play before scoring 13 points to go along with eight rebounds in a semifinal loss to the College of Brockport.

In the consolation game against the University of Rochester, Ryan missed a double-double by a single point, notching nine points and 10 boards as the Cardinals held on to win 60-58.

The freshman big-man is leading the team with 14.2 points per game and in rebounds per contest with 8.4.

Cock-A-Doodle-Shoe Snowshoe Race Jan. 18

SARANAC — DION Snowshoes will heat up winter on the Adirondack Coast with the second annual Cock-A-Doodle-Shoe Snowshoe Race.

The Cock-A-Doodle Shoe, one of the Northeast’s regional qualifiers for the 2014 USSSA National Snowshoe Championships in Bennington, VT, offers a 5K and 10K snowshoe race that makes use of the rolling trails covering most of New Land Trust’s 287 scenic acres in Saranac.

The competition is open to participants of all levels with $150 cash prize for the overall male and female winners in the 10K race and $50 cash prize to the overall male and female winners in the 5K race.
