Amerlink, Schara lead first day of Tanneberger

WESTPORT — Derek Amerlink and Brian Schara combined for a superb 35-35-70 in brutal weather conditions on Friday to take the first-round lead in the Championship Flight at the 34th-Annual Dr. Thomas Tanneberger Memorial Golf Tournament being held at the Westport Country Club.

Ed Davis and Len Freitas, last year’s champions, finished with a round of 75 in the two-person, best-ball event. Brian Cross and Paul Salerno, champions two years ago, also had a 75 on Friday.

The opening round of the three-day tournament featured tee times with everyone going off on the first hole. Flights were established following the first day and there will be an 11 a.m. shotgun start today for the second round. The third and final round will take place on Sunday.
