Driscoll, Ehmann pace PSU cross country at Atlantic Regionals

---- — MT. MORRIS, N.Y. — Led by a couple of All-Region performances by Kelley Driscoll and Katie Ehmann, the Plattsburgh State women’s cross country team picked up a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals this morning at Letchworth State Park.

As a team, the Cardinals racked up 491 points, finishing 20th among the 38-team field.

New York University claimed the team title, netting 97 points and placing a pair of runners in the top 15. St. Lawrence accumulated 103 points to finish in second place while TCNJ (148), SUNY Geneseo (149) and Oneonta State (177) rounded out the top five. Student-athletes who finished in the top 35 were placed on the All-Region Team. The regional race was hosted by SUNY Geneseo.

Cruising along at a pace of 5:50 per mile, Driscoll secured a top-15 finish at the final race before the NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championships. The Geneva, N.Y., product covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 21:44.1.

Ehmann was the second member of the Cardinals’ seven-woman team to cross the finish line. The All-SUNYAC Third Team performer was clocked in a 30th-place time of 22:25.7.

Just missing out on a finish among the top 100 student-athletes was Amanda Joskow, who traversed the course in 23:39.3. Joskow placed 103rd in the field of 269 runners.

Taking part in their first NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional, the freshman tandem of Lauren Perschetz (164th, 24:41.7) and Morgan Deming (183rd, 25:05.1) rounded out the top-five finishers for Plattsburgh State.

Sophomore Megan Schweizer (207th, 25:53.4) and freshman Kristin Schnalzer (226th, 26:52.0) also took part in the race.

Depending on what happens in other regional races around the country today, Driscoll may get a chance to participate in the NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championships in Hanover, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 23.

CARDINAL MEN TAKE 27TH

MT. MORRIS, N.Y. — Sophomore Jason Flach was the top finisher for the Plattsburgh State men’s cross country team as the Cardinals ran to a 27th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals on Saturday afternoon at Letchworth State Park.

Collecting 737 points on the afternoon, Plattsburgh State checked in at 27th place among the 39 competing teams.

Taking home the team title was SUNY Cortland, which boasted all five of their point-producing runners in the top 15. The 37 points accumulated by the Red Dragons beat out the remaining top-five institutions NYU (62 points), SUNY Geneseo (103 points), St. Lawrence (118 points) and RPI (148 points).

Relying on the experience he picked up at the regional race last season, Flach was the first Plattsburgh State student-athlete to cross the finish line. Flach turned in a time of 27:07.8 along the eight-kilometer course, good for 109th place.

Fellow sophomore Zach Rose grabbed a 132nd-place finish by traveling along the course in a time of 27:33.6. Continuing his trend of strong races late in the season, freshman Michael Larkin was the third Cardinal competitor to finish, taking 145th place with a time of 27:46.4.

Rounding out the group of top-200 finishers for the Cardinals were freshmen Louis Castellani (176th, 28:26.5) and Ethan Vinson (187th, 28:44.2). Additionally, Castellani and Vinson were the final two members of the Plattsburgh State squad to pick up team points.

Brendan Connor narrowly missed out on a top-200 finish, placing 201st in a time of 29:01.5. Joseph Nichols was the final Plattsburgh State runner to cross the line in the 275-man race. The freshman finished in a time of 29:30.6 (211th place).
