AuSable Valley fifth
GRANVILLE — AuSable Valley placed fifth Saturday in the Ken Harrison Memorial Tournament, hosted by Granville High School.
The Patriots finished with 83 points, just six out of fourth and 17 out of third.
“This is the highest we have placed in this tournament since the late 1990s,” AuSable Valley coach John Dukett said. “We went with 11 wrestlers, so we gave up a lot of points. But we were able to get four wrestlers to the semifinals and one to the finals.
“The boys were focused and real tough in the wrestlebacks.”
Leading the way for the Patriots was Kenneth Rivers at 285 pounds. Rivers pinned two opponents before being pinned by Shenendehowa’s Jacob Brooks in the championship match for second place.
Elijah Gainer (3-1 at 126), Jeremy Owen (2-2 at 152) and Michael Thompson (4-1 at 220) lost to eventual champions in the semifinals and finished third, fourth and third, respectively.
Gainer won two matches by pin and one by major decision, while Owen won by pin and major decision. Thompson had three pins and an injury default.
Kodie Simpson (2-2 at 160), Keith Christensen (2-2 at 170) and Collin Fuller (2-2 at 195) all came within a victory of placing.
Other AuSable Valley wrestlers who participated include Dylan Baker (1-2 at 120), Evan Cobb (2-2 at 138), Dan Evans (0-2) at 145 and Richard Nichols (0-2 at 182).
“I’m very proud of the team — we haven’t been able to crack the top 10 in this tourney of 16 teams for a long time,” Dukett said. “We’re a very young team and every one of them wrestled well and never gave up.”
