Peru's Phillips wins 100th career match

AMSTERDAM — The Peru wrestling team, with Noah Phillips recording his 100th-career varsity victory, finished with a 4-1 record at Saturday’s Dutch Valley Dual Meet Invitational, hosted by Amsterdam High School.

The Indians posted a 45-28 victory over Amsterdam, a 65-18 win over Monroe-Woodbury B, a 50-27 decision over Ilion and a 56-21 victory over Whitehall before dropping a 53-15 match to Monroe-Woodbury A.

“I’m happy with the way the kids wrestled,” said Peru co-head coach Mike Hogan. “Monroe-Woodbury is a Division I team. They handled us and are legit. They don’t have a great wrestler like Troy Seymour, but they’re good.

“It’s hard to believe, but we’re already 20-2 in dual matches this year.”

Seymour continued his outstanding season by going 5-0 at 170 pounds while earning Outstanding Wrestler honors, as voted on by the coaches.

Phillips, wrestling at 152, pinned Whitehall’s Julian Barber in 1:15 for his 100th-career victory.

Seymour and Tanner Phillips (138) both went 5-0 on the day, while Jordan Bushey (145) was 4-0 for the Indians.

Kyler Agoney (120), Nick Forget (132), Noah Phillips (152), Taylor Avanzato (195) and Luke McKee (220-285) all finished with 4-1 records for Peru.

“The 132-poind weight class was by far the best,” said Hogan. “Nick Forget had to wrestle three three-time sectional champions, including two state place-winners from a year ago.”
