Cards finish second at St. Lawrence relay

---- — CANTON — The Plattsburgh State men’s and women’s track and field teams opened up their indoor seasons on a high note at the Saint Lawrence University Holiday Relay Meet on Saturday.

Both squads earned runner-up finishes at the meet and a number of Plattsburgh State athletes captured championships in their respective events. St. Lawrence captured the championship on both the men’s and women’s side after posting 277 and 205 points respectively.

After wrapping up her career on the pitch earlier this year, Kristie Pageau turned her attention to a number of track and field events and walked away with a first-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles. Pageau flew through the course in a time 9.82 seconds before finishing third in the high jump (1.53 meters) and second in the long jump (4.65 meters).

True freshman Savannah Davis picked up a first-place finish in the pole vault, clearing the 2.6 meter bar to accomplish the feat.

Amanda Gadway picked up right where she left off in the field events after a sensational freshman season in 2011-12. The Malone native finished first in the weight throw with a distance of 13.33 meters.

In her first collegiate meet, Laura Diehl placed second in the shotput, finishing with a distance of 10.67 meters.

Meaghan Sheehan finished third in the mile run with a time of 6:00.40, helping the Cardinals collect 96 points to finish ahead of Colgate and SUNY Delhi.

On the men’s side, Josh Garren sprinted a first-place finish in the 60 meter dash, finishing the race in 7.19 seconds. He would produce another first-place finish as well, this time in the 200 meter dash, with a time of 23.29.

In the 800 meter run, Evan Greenberg crossed the line first in 2:02.92 – nearly four seconds ahead of his nearest competition – to earn first place.

In the field events, Ryan Kerner posted a runner-up finish in the high jump, leaping 1.88 meters. Ben Depo was another second-place finisher for the Cardinals after a 6.07 meter long jump put him on the second-highest podium.

Corey Duval began his collegiate career in a big way, picking up a first-place finish in the shotput (13.61 meters) and a runner-up finish in the weight throw (11.64 meters) to help the Cardinals amass 115 points to finish ahead of SUNY Delhi.

The Cardinals are off for over a month before their next meet while will also take place on the campus of St. Lawrence University. Plattsburgh State will take part in the St. Lawrence Invitational on Saturday, January 19.
