Lake Placid wins, Saranac Lake captures tie in boys' hockey

SARANAC LAKE — The Lake Placid boys’ hockey team was able to hold off Niskayuna/Schenectady despite a third-period charge to win the first game of the Casey McHugh Memorial Hockey Tournament on Friday.

The Blue Bombers will face Burnt Hills/Balston Spa today, and Niskayuna/Schenectady will play Saranac Lake. The tournament is based on a points system.

Keegan Barney scored two goals in under a minute in Friday’s first period. The first came from a pass by Ryan Damp, and the second was assisted by Eddie Kane and Nzoni Thompson.

Lake placid tallied two more in the second period. Shane McNierney scored after a Conner Preston pass, and five minutes later Ryan Damp added an unassisted goal to bring the lead to 4-0 at the end of the period.

The Mohawks made it a game when they put two scores on the board early in the third. Matt Peretti grabbed the first off an assist from Luke Miller and Ben Fisher while Lucas Maloney brought his team within two with another assist by Fisher.

McNierney added his second goal of the game late in the third when Eddie Kane fed him the puck to seal the deal.

Evan Maloney added the Mohawk’s final goal, again off an assist by Fisher.

Burnt Hills/Balston Spa 3, Saranac Lake 3

SARANAC LAKE — The Red Storm scored three straight in the third period to climb out of a 3-0 hole and salvage a tie in the second game of the tournament.

Nick Bayruns found the net 3:09 into the third period, and Grant Strack put the Red Storm within a goal three minutes later. Then Strack put the puck high after a scrum in front at 10:24 to even the score.

“We’re still trying to find our identity this year. There are a lot of new faces on the squad,” Saranac Lake coach Will Ellsworth said. “We lost some firepower (from last year).
