---- — TROY — The Clinton Community College coaching staff has been preaching to its players to be able to play consistently for a full 40-minute basketball game.
After falling to Cayuga Community College by a single point in the final 10 seconds Saturday, the Cougars may have received the message.
Clinton pulled ahead in the second half against a tough Hudson Valley Community College to capture a 62-54 victory in men’s college basketball Monday.
The Cougars and Vikings went into the half tied at 33 and the Cougars were forced to make some adjustments defensively.
“We had to make some adjustments at halftime,” Clinton coach Kevin Daugherty said. “They were attacking our zone in the first half and we had to make some adjustments. We did a nice job.
“We played a solid 40 minutes (Monday). We have been preaching doing that for the last couple of weeks. We have shown some promise this season, but the way they bounced back after a one-point loss, and on the road, showed a lot about their character.”
Mykell Crecko scored 19 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked four shots. Kyree Hull also chipped in with 19 points, while Chris Miller tallied 13 points. Jamie Davison dished out five assists.
Jose Reyes scored a team-high 19 points for the Vikings. Brandon Dean added 13 points, while both Jeremy Taylor and Giacomo Giglio finished with six. Reyes connected on 5 3-poitners.
“This was a big win for us,” Daugherty said. “We haven’t beaten Hudson Valley since 2007 and to do it on the road after a tough loss on Saturday … I am very proud of the kids.
“That was a quality win against a good team, and a big region win for us.”
The Cougars are off for Thanksgiving break, but return to the court when they travel to Fulton-Montgomery on Wednesday, Nov. 28 for a 7 p.m. game.
