Spittler, Zalis lead Knights over Eagles in girls' NBL

PLATTSBURGH — The Seton Catholic girls’ basketball team opened Division II play by pulling away from Westport for a 53-32 Northern Basketball League victory.

The Knights used a big fourth quarter, accumulating 17 points.

Paige Spittler led the charge for Seton Catholic with 18 points and six steals, while Hailey Moore chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds. Gretchen Zalis added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Maddison Murnane dished out five assists.

“Both teams played very well despite having foul trouble throughout the game,” Knights coach Danielle Castine said. “Seton had a very strong second and fourth quarter, and Westport went on a run in the third.

“There were well balanced offensive and defensive contributions by Seton.”

Brendee Russell tallied 12 points to lead the Eagles. Ellie Schwoebel tossed in eight points.

Elizabethtown-Lewis 43, Lake Placid 15

LAKE PLACID — Jasmin Barnes fired in a game-high 20 points, while the Lions played stout defense throughout in their lopsided win.

Lily Whalen scored nine points. Emma Disogra added eight points.

“Jasmin Barnes’ outstanding performance on both ends of the floor did us in,” Blue Bombers coach Jeff Potter said. “Lily Whalen, just 54 points shy of 1,000 career points going into the game, had an off night shooting, but did a tremendous job on the boards.”

Lake Placid faced a 30-6 deficit at the end of the third quarter.

Chloe Uebrick paced the Blue Bombers with four points.
