NORFOLK — The Adams Glass Senior Babe Ruth team rebounded from two tough losses Saturday with two victories Sunday, finishing with a solid showing and a 2-2 record in the Norfolk Rovers Tournament.
“We may have lost two games, but we were a better team Saturday night than we were on Saturday morning,” Adams Glass coach John Demarais said. “We talked about being mentally tough and on Sunday we were. We came out and played that way.
“We made a couple of mistakes on Saturday that cost us two games. We could have just as easily been 4-0. But it was still a real good weekend for us.”
Saturday, Adams Glass dropped a 3-2 decision to the Ogdensburg Maples and then a 6-5 contest to the host Norfolk Rovers when the Rovers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win it.
Luis Pepen-Matos took the loss against the Maples despite allowing just four hits and striking out 12 in going the distance. Nick Demarais led Adams Glass with two hits, with Nick Uliva, Kyle Sprague, Kyle McCarthy, Alex Lamberton and Jacob Kennedy adding one each.
Against the Rovers, Uliva led the way with two hits and Pepen-Matos doubled. Michael Danis, Demarais and losing pitcher Kevin Sousa chipped in with a hit apiece.
The fortunes then turned better for Adams Glass Sunday.
Kennedy went four innings to get the win and Demarais three innings for the save in a 5-2 victory over the Watertown Legion. Pepen-Matos doubled, while Sousa, McCarthy and Ryan McCall added a single each.
The Peru-based team then rallied for a 7-5 victory over the Ottawa Knights, scoring a run in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Sousa, the third pitcher used by Adams Glass, picked up the win in relief. Sprague rapped out three hits and Pepen-Matos two to lead the offense. Sousa and Uliva followed with one hit each.
Adams Glass has a 6-6-1 record for the season.
