Gove named Academic All-American, granted scholarship

PLATTSBURGH — The awards continue to roll in for Teal Gove of the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team as the recent graduate was named Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for the Division III Women’s At-Large Program.

The Berwick, Ont., native becomes the first Plattsburgh State student-athlete to be selected as a Capital One Academic All-American of the Year.

Gove was also named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Women’s At-Large First Team, which is a follow-up to her Third-Team selection in 2012.

She is one of just two women’s ice hockey players to be recognized on this year’s Division III At-Large Team, which is selected annually by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Gove was also one of 58 student-athletes to receive an NCAA Winter Postgraduate Scholarship. Each winter, 29 male and 29 female winter sports student-athletes from across all divisions each receive an award of $7,500.

Gove graduated in May with a bachelor’s of science in biology, maintaining a 3.83 grade-point average during her time at Plattsburgh State. She will be continuing her studies in the fall at McGill University in Montreal, Que.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 on a scale of 4.0, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

To qualify for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution’s faculty athletics representative.
