Cardinal women drop season opener

NORTH ADAMS, MASS – Plattsburgh State wasn’t unable to find its shooting touch.

The Cardinals lost their season opener Saturday, 56-49, to Wesleyan University as part of the Williams College Tip-off Tournament.

Holding a nine-point lead at halftime, poor shooting and inefficient rebounding led to Plattsburgh’s demise.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game,” Cardinals coach Cheryl Cole said. “(They) outworked us on rebounding and their team shot a little bit better.”

Plattsburgh’s lead at halftime was mainly due to its ability to get to the free throw line. The Cardinals were just above 85 percent from the line, whereas they shot a lackluster 17.8 percent from the field.

In the second half, the Cardinals improved slightly from the floor, shooting around 22 percent, while Wesleyan shot slightly better with a 30 percent field-goal percentage.

“We got to the line, but we couldn’t buy a basket from the floor,” Cole said. “We had some really good shots, they just didn’t go down.”

Brittany Marshall led the Cardinals with 14 points, along with six rebounds, two assists and four steals. Kathleen Payne added 11 points for Plattsburgh, along with seven rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal.

As for Wesleyan, it was led by Cherkira Lashley and Kaylie Williams who had 14 and 13 points, respectively. Lashley and Williams were also very active on the boards, accumulating 10 offensive and 10 defensive rebounds combined.

Overall, Wesleyan outrebounded the Cardinals 55-45, including 21-12 on the offensive boards.

“I thought we did fine defensively, but of course we could always get better,” Cole said. “But we gave up 16 offensive boards in the second half and that was the difference, that was the game changer I’d say.”

After a disappointing opening season loss, Cole said her group was “tight” and “anxious” at the start of the game. However, she is excited for her team to recover and get back in action today against Williams College.
