MIDDLETOWN — The Chazy boys’ soccer team found a way to reach down for a little extra Saturday.
Dylan Garrow’s goal 6:33 into the second overtime gave the Eagles an improbable 2-1 victory over Fort Ann in the NYSPHSAA Class D semifinals at Middletown High School.
Chazy, gunning for its seventh Class D state championship, will play Jasper-Troupsburg in today’s 1 p.m. title contest.
“I knew Fort Ann was a great team and that it was going to be a battle,” Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe said. “It was a battle.
“I’m very proud of our team. This isn’t the most talented team we’ve had at Chazy. But I know they will come and play hard every game and that’s why we won (Saturday).”
The Section VII and defending state champion Eagles, who are short on depth this season to start with, had more than Fort Ann to overcome with standout Chazy players cramping up and having to spend time on the bench.
The Section II champions (19-2) appeared to have the momentum going into overtime and had some quality chances.
But that all changed in the second extra 15-minute stanza.
The Eagles’ Zach Brothers sent in a lofting shot that bounced off the post.
Moments later, Garrow, who had gone into the game as a substitute, found himself at the right place at the right time.
“Coach put me in the game and I wanted to give 110 percent,” he said.
“Gage Ducatte sent a good serve in front of the net and it went off their defender right to me. My only thought was to bury it. I was in the right spot at the right time.”
“We just kept defending and hoped to get that one goal that would win it for us,” McAuliffle said.
“Our goalie Trent Blais kept us in it when Fort Ann was taking it to us, and our back four of Dylan Doran, Alec LaPierre, Spencer Rogers and Keagan O’Connor played very well.”
