Paul Smith’s College hosting St. Regis Canoe Classic

PAUL SMITHS — Paul Smith’s College will be coordinating the 25th-annual St. Regis Canoe Classic on Sept. 22 on campus. The St. Regis Canoe Classic will feature more than 25 categories for recreation canoes, standard canoes, racing canoes, kayaks as well as one- and two-man guideboats.

The event benefits the Paul Smith’s College Recreation Department. The Classic has been extremely popular with North Country canoe racers since 1988, as the loop traverses Lower and Upper St. Regis Lakes, as well as Spitfire Lake, with St. Regis Mountain looming in front of the paddlers for most of the seven-mile trek. This event is one of the few flatwater courses that start and finish in the same area, eliminating the efforts of a pit crew for the competitors.

All paddlers will hit the water with a mass start at approximately 10 a.m. on Lower St. Regis Lake. Competitors will register their boats from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The entry fee will include a post-race meal hosted by Sodexho dining services. Specially designed ceramic mugs will be awarded to the top three boats in each category.

Entry forms and information may be obtained by contacting Kirsten Domas at 327-6389 or at
