SARANAC LAKE —
Last year, the Red Storm defense surrendered just 9.6 points per game and held opponents from scoring double-digit points on seven occasions.
This year, though, only Ackerson and Thurber return on the defensive side of the football.
“We expect our inside linebackers to be Thurber and Joseph Atkinson, and we expect great things out of them,” Bennett said. “Lance of course will make a lot of plays. Dylan Gunther as well as Dustin Fischer will make contributions on the defensive side of the ball.”
With Saranac moving to Class C, Bennett expects the three-team division to be ultra-competitive.
“With our only returner on offense being Lance and just two returners on defense, we know we’ve got a tough road to go,” Bennett said. “We’re going to be fighting to compete every week, but we’re staying positive, and we’re playing Saranac Lake football. We hope that we can just stay the course; we can be competitive and have a chance to compete for that championship at the end of the year.
“We know that across the league, there’s a lot of talent back and a lot of guys itching to get their shot at Saranac Lake, and we’re prepared for that.”
Saranac Lake hosts Peru at Ken Wilson Field for 1:30 p.m. today.
