Bobcats beat Cougars in men's soccer action.
---- — PLATTSBURGH — The way Sunday’s game was going, Clinton Community College men’s soccer coach Gene Bushey figured it was going to be a one-goal difference.
He was right.
But, unfortunately for the Cougars, Paul Smith’s College scored the only goal of the game in a season-opening 1-0 win at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Soccer Complex.
Steve Rathburn’s goal just 1:00 in the second half provided the margin of difference for the Bobcats.
“We were playing our flat four and they were able to get through the middle,” said Bushey. “He (Rathburn) went in one-on-one on our goalie and put the ball into the far right side of the net.”
Paul Smith’s held an 18-17 advantage in shots on goal and the Cougars had their share of chances.
“We had a lot of opportunities, especially towards the end,” said Bushey. “But we couldn’t score. I was pleased with how we played, but we could have probably squeezed the middle a little more. We have some things we need to work on.
“It was a good match-up and it was good soccer to watch. Paul Smith’s is a lot better than they were last year.”
With starting goalie Josh Rabideau out for the season with an injury, Adam Goldfarb played his first game in net for the Cougars and finished with 16 saves.
“Goldfarb played great,” said Bushey. “He made some big saves for us when it was a 1-0 game.
“Kaleb Snide and Daniel Escobar played well in the middle and Singa Barry did a good job up front.”
The Cougars are idle until they host Cayuga Community College at 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Plattsburgh High School.
