NASHUA, N.H. — Saturday was a lot better than the day before for the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team.
The Cardinals, bouncing back from a 2-0 loss to Colby-Sawyer to open their season, were a 3-0 winner over Rivier College in non-league play on Saturday.
“We responded,” Plattsburgh coach Karen Waterbury said. “We finished the weekend on a positive note.”
Lauren Gonyea gave Plattsburgh the lead when she took a back pass from Cassidy Clavet and chipped a shot from outside the 18 into the net at 25:17 of the first half.
It stayed that way until Clavet got a loose ball at the top of the 18 and gave the Cardinals a two-goal advantage with 25:31 gone in the second half.
Jill Tardelli then finished off the scoring with 7:36 left in the contest.
“We moved the ball well and had some well-struck goals in the upper 90,” Waterbury said. “Lauren’s goal got us off to a good start. They kept us on the outside of the box and we were able to score from there.
“We still could be better in the attacking third, but it was an improvement both on offense and defense today for us.”
The Cardinals dominated play with a 26-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Charisse Abellard was in net for her first-career shutout and Cassandra Brown recorded nine saves for Rivier, which is coached by former Plattsburgh standout Laura Ray.
“We still need to shoot more and crash the net,” Waterbury said. “But we were able to get a lot of people in the game and it’s always nice to get a shutout.”
Plattsburgh returns home and will host the Cardinal Classic on Friday and Saturday.
