SARATOGA — It was nothing short of a dominating performance for senior Kelley Driscoll who took home the individual crown at the RPI Opener with a first-place finish in a time of 18:27.9 on Saturday morning. Held at Saratoga State Park, the meet was the first of the 2013 campaign for the Cardinals.
The two-time All-NCAA Atlantic Region honoree finished almost 35 seconds ahead of fellow Plattsburgh State competitor Katie Ehmann who was clocked at a second-place time of 19:02.2 over the 3.04-mile course.
Thanks to their strong one-two punch, the Cardinals captured a second-place team finish at the meet with 49 points. Oneonta State accumulated just 30 points and placed five runners in the top ten to earn the team championship.
Joining her upperclassmen teammates in the top ten was sophomore Megan Schweizer who crossed the finish line in ninth place with a time of 20:02.4.
A trio of freshmen was the next point-producing gang that finished the course for the Cardinals. Melanie Taylor recorded a 31st-place finish in her first college race with a time of 21:03.8. Close behind Taylor was Michelle Collins who traveled the course in 21:16.4 which was good for 33rd place. Lauren Perschetz rounded out the freshman trio with a 35th-place time of 21:27.0.
Kristin Schnalzer was the final point-producing finisher boasted by Plattsburgh State. The first-year runner finished the course in 41st-place time of 21:41.5.
With their 2013 season opener in the books, the Cardinals head back to Plattsburgh to take part in their only home meet of the season. The Cardinal Classic is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, in the Rugar Woods trail system outside the Field House Complex.
Vinson paces Plattsbrugh State men
