Plattsburgh State volleyball gets first win of season

BRISTOL, R.I. — A dominating performance by the Plattsburgh State volleyball team against Rhode Island College helped the Cardinals finish 1-1 on the second day of the Roger Williams University Invitational.

With a strong first set by Plattsburgh State, it looked as though the Cardinals would have a relatively easy time knocking off their Liberty League foe. Junior Maggie Schrantz set the tone early by blasting down three of her match-high 14 kills during a 13-4 Plattsburgh State run to open the match.

Union appeared sluggish to say the least, accumulating a hitting percentage of -.105 in the first set. That trend, however, did not continue for the remainder of the match.

Having awoken from their offensive slumber, the Dutchwomen surpassed the .200 mark in terms of attack percentage in each of the following three sets.

The energy shown by Union seemed to have been stolen directly from the Cardinals who couldn’t reach the 20-point mark in any of the remaining frames.

Plattsburgh State fell victim to early runs by Union in the second and third sets and a devastating 11-1 spurt in the fourth frame.

Rosi Cummings tallied 12 kills and completed her double-double with 15 digs. Freshman Lisa Camargo added 10 kills as and 13 digs in the losing effort. Meghan Clifford accumulated 28 assists and Kristen Marchisatto had

12 of her own. RWU All-Tournament Team selection Amanda Wickers made a team-high 20 digs.

The Cardinals hit .100 compared to a .133 mark by Union.

Not wanting a repeat of their early morning misfortune, the Cardinals kept their foot on the gas pedal from the opening serve in a straight set victory over Rhode Island College in their final match of the Roger Williams Invitational.

After the Anchorwomen jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, freshman Lisa Camargo responded with a kill that set a 3-0 Plattsburgh State run in motion ensuring the Cardinals wouldn’t trail in the set again.
