Onondaga blanks Clinton women in opener

PLATTSBURGH — It was a tough way for the Clinton Community College women’s soccer team to open its 2013 season on Saturday.

Onondaga Community College recorded a 5-0 victory over the Cougars.

The Lazers took a 3-0 first-half lead on goals by Alexandra Gallo, Rachel Gac and Jenna Herbert, and added two more goals after intermission when Emily Parker and Emily Barriere scored.

Courtney Backus made eight saves in net for the Cougars, who were outshot by a 19-0 margin.

“It was a tough team to open up against,” Clinton coach Kaila Sciascia said. “The positive was that our girls worked hard throughout the game.

“But we didn’t connect with one another and we need to do a better job supporting one another both offensively and defensively.”

The Cougars return to play on Tuesday at Paul Smith’s College.
