10 YEARS AGO (2003)

Johnny Munson, Mike Watts, Jr., Dean Frady, Bill Sapel and Stub Pepper — representing the North Bowl Pro Shop — post a 3,629 score to come in first in the A Division of the New York State Men’s Bowling Championship Tournament.

Quarterback Eddie Castine passes for 3 first-half touchdowns and Corey Lawyer runs for two scores as the Lake City Stars smack the Green Mountain Gladiators 36-0 in Empire Football League play.

Bucko Branham leads from flag to flag in winning the 100-lap PrimeLink Dick Nephew Memorial 100 at Airborne Speedway.

Dave Huru (2-day total, 149) and Sue Stefanick (171) capture the championship flights in the Bluff Point Golf Resort club tournament while Matt King (156) and Mary Lou Zaferakis (162) win top honors at Adirondack Golf & Country Club.

Josh McDougal is a repeat winner in the 13th Run for Jon while Kelly Duffy is first across the line for the women.

20 YEARS AGO (1993)

Keene Central, with only 14 boys in grades 8-12, merges with Elizabethtown-Lewis Central in soccer for one year.

Paul Leahy resigns as Saranac football coach and physical-education instructor to accept an administrative position in Saranac Lake. Former Saranac standout Keith Tedford is appointed interim football coach.

Sophomore Cy Ellsworth, the former Saranac Lake standout, earns a starting position at guard with the Syracuse University Orangemen, who are coming off a 10-2 season.

John Underwood of Lake Placid and Peru’s Sara Facteau win the annual Run for Jon.

Brad Marshall drives in 4 runs with a home run and double as Sidelines rallies to defeat Top 40 Video and complete a sweep of their Malone AmVets Slo-Pitch Softball League championship series. Winning pitcher Greg Dumas and Mike Wescott contribute 3 hits apiece while Dave Goff belts a 2-run homer for Top 40.

25 YEARS AGO (1988)

Ross O’Loughlin rallies from 8 strokes back to win the North Country Golf Club championship with a 54-hole score of 226. Pat Welch finishes one stroke behind with Mike Zurlo, third, with a 229. Kathy Barcomb wins the ladies’ title with a 36-hole score of 170.

Mary Fry defeats Marcy Santa 8-6 to claim her second Bluff Point Golf & Country Club title in three years. Mike O’Connor beats Bob Buckley 3-1 to win his sixth Bluff Point crown.

Stan Loya Sr. pitches a 3-hitter with 10 strikeouts and also delivers the game-winning hit as Gordon Oil completes a 3-game sweep of 20 Main for its sixth straight AuSable Forks Fast-Pitch Softball League championship.

Bob Meconi captures the Indole Golf & Country Club title with a 54-hole score of 233.

30 YEARS AGO (1983)

Art and Chris Lussi defeat Mike Porter and Cindy Baker, 6-1, 6-3, to win the 4th Annual Pepsi Challenge Cup Mixed Doubles tennis tournament.

Geoff Doorey pitches a 3-hitter with 10 strikeouts, Gary Barber chips in with 3 hits, including a homer, and shortstop Mike Rock initiates a big double play as Ormsby’s Well Drillers down AuSable Forks 8-1 to give Peru its second consecutive CVBL crown and sixth, overall.

Harry Frenyea and Tom Buckley belt 3-run homers to power Adams Glass/State Police to an 11-2 title-clinching victory over Plattsburgh Coca-Cola in the Peru Slo-Pitch Softball League playoffs.

40 YEARS AGO (1973)

Bill Sorrell rips a 3-run homer and finishes with seven runs-batted-in as the Press-Republican completes a sweep of The Red Lyon in the Gentlemen’s Slo-Pitch Softball League playoffs. Winning pitcher Dennis Burt goes 4-for-4.

Steve Chilton’s 2-out double in the bottom of the 10th inning lifts Ellenburg to a 5-4 triumph over Lyon Mountain, giving the Eagles the Champlain Valley Baseball League championship. Barry Dimick raps out 3 hits to back winning pitcher Lou Buck.

Harry Walcoff, sailing a Pierson 26, wins the A Division while Peter Hornby, in a Cal 21, takes the B Division in the Valcour Sailing Club races.

Bill Ryan rips the nets for 21 points and Derrick Wells and Russ Bouyea contribute 13 each to lead the Comets past the Cajuns in the City Outdoor Basketball League championship game.

50 YEARS AGO (1963)

Marv Hendrix and Walt Doty chip in with 2 hits apiece to back winning pitcher Wally Stone as Plattsburgh High edges MAI, 6-5, to win the intra-city softball league title for the second year in a row. Bob Cadieux clubs a 2-run homer for MAI.

The Northern Tier is abuzz after Dudley Trombley of Rouses Point pulls in a fish resembling a sturgeon from Lake Champlain in the vicinity of Fort Montgomery. It measures at more than 6 feet in length.

Gary Covey and Bill Key combine to strike out 15 as the Senior League All-Stars shut out the league champion Pirates 7-0. Pat Gregory and Dan Bodette chip in with 2 hits apiece. Losing pitcher Bill Cox strikes out 10 while Hector Duquette gets 2 hits for the Pirates.

60 YEARS AGO (1953)

Harold Johnson tosses a no-hitter to lead Payson’s Jewelers to an 11-0 victory over Ubl’s in City Softball League play. Jack Proctor goes 3-for-5 with a 3-run homer and Norm Votraw adds 2 hits.

Gretchen Siegel beats Margaret Davern 5 and 4 to win the Sharron Cup at the Plattsburgh Golf Club. In the non-handicap division, Rita Quinn defeats Ruth Grant on the 19th hole.

70 YEARS AGO (1943)

Scheier’s Cardinals complete the City Softball League regular season undefeated with Copeland and Goddeau forming the battery. Morrisonville, with Les Bouyea handling the pitching, finishes second, one game out of first.
