10 YEARS AGO (2002)

E Amanda Deyoe pitches a 2-hitter in the opener and also gets the win in Game 2 as Clinton Community College sweeps a softball doubleheader from North Country Community College. Kaleen McCool, Erin McKane and Sonia Altamura come through with RBI hits in the second game.

▶ Billy Arquette, 20, playing for Eagles Tavern of Hogansburg, beats Willie Mattila of Keeseville's Riverside Hotel to become the youngest champion in the 26-year history of the Northern New York 8-Ball Tournament.

▶ Kenny Bezio's 2-run homer highlights a 10-run, fourth-inning explosion that carries Clinton CC to its first win of the baseball season, 10-4 over Adirondack CC.

▶ Ticonderoga's Kendra Fuller tosses a one-hitter at Syracuse CBA as the Sentinels improve to 3-1 in the Grand Strand Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Alicia Kryston rips a triple while Tara Vilardo and Fuller chip in with RBI singles for the Sentinels.

20 YEARS AGO (1992)

E Tim Barnewall, 6-foot-4 senior forward from Chateaugay, is named to the New York State Class D Third Team for boys' basketball. Barnewall leads the area in scoring, averaging 23.9 points per game.

▶ Bryant Butler, senior guard for Seton Catholic, lands on the State Class B Ninth Team after averaging 17.6 points a game for the Knights.

▶ Former Franklin Academy standout Wendi Clarke wins the high jump for Plattsburgh State in the Albany Invitational track & field meet.

25 YEARS AGO (1987)

E Kathy Brandell-Champagne wins the Kingston Classic with a new course record for women — 34 minutes, 55.9 seconds for 10 kilometers.

▶ Dean Rock raps 2 homers in one inning to lead MAI to a 20-2 thrashing of Moriah.

▶ Gary Peryea collects 4 hits, including 2 triples, in Northern Adirondack's 16-10 season-opening win over Saranac.

▶ Tammy Miller's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh lifts Saranac to a 2-1 win over Northern Adirondack.

▶ Kristina Gruendling pitches a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and helps her cause with 4 hits as Peru defeats Saranac Lake 12-3.

▶ Michelle Duso drives in 2 runs with a pair of hits to lead Beekmantown to a 7-2 win over Plattsburgh High.

30 YEARS AGO (1982)

▶ Ticonderoga's Bill Brennan, who leads the area in scoring averaging 23.3 points a contest, is named to the New York State Small School Second Team in boys' basketball. Plattsburgh High's Larry Moskowitz and Angelo Sutton land on the 12th and 13th teams, respectively.

▶ Frank Buksa scores the winning goal in the fourth sudden-death overtime to give the Plattsburgh Knights of Columbus the championship in the Dover (N.H.) Invitational hockey tournament. Ron Cao-Ba leads the Plattsburgh team with 6 points while Shane Adams contributes 5.

▶ Sophomore guard Rosemary Harlem of Plattsburgh earns her second varsity letter in women's basketball at Elmira College.

▶ Former PHS standout Guy Garrow of Champlain College is named to the All-Region III Third Team in basketball.

40 YEARS AGO (1972)

▶ Sandy Carlo wins the Women's A competition in her first try at the U.S. Indoor Archery Championships. Charles Carlo finishes fourth in the Men's A class.

▶ Moriah senior Jill Firlik and Lori Ann Rennell, competing in the 11-12 age group, claim victories in the first synchronized swimming competition sponsored by the Plattsburgh State Dolphins Swim Club.

▶ Ticonderoga's Tom Gunning puts together a 734 handicap series to win men's singles in the North Country Handicap Classic at Adirondack Lanes.

▶ Jeff Sweet gets 2 hits and Bob Maher belts a 2-run homer in Plattsburgh State's twinbill setback at St. Michael's College. Pete DiDonato and Gary Jackson are the losing pitchers for the Cardinals.

50 YEARS AGO (1962)

▶ Saranac Lake assemblyman Hayward "Red" Plumadore, who wrestled and boxed at St. Lawrence University, is named to lead a state legislative investigation of professional boxing in the wake of the death of Benny (Kid) Paret.

▶ Mike Branon, former St. John's standout, signs a professional baseball contract with the Milwaukee Braves. Branon, the son of Irish coach Barry Branon, starred in baseball and football at Holy Cross College.

▶ Plattsburgh High baseball coach George Kimball has plenty of depth in pitching to start the season with veterans Allen Rowlson and Rick Fayard backed up by Ray Dubuque, Tom Beauvais, Jimmy Baker and Jerry Golden.

60 YEARS AGO (1952)

▶ The Brooklyn Dodgers send Johnny Podres, 19, of Witherbee, and Mal Mallette to their Montreal farm team.

▶ The Third-Annual Keene Hill Climb will offer 7 classes, according to the Motor Sports Club of America. Keene Valley's Alec Luck is the committee chairman. Karl Smith of AuSable Forks is expected to return after turning in the best area finish for 1951 in his modified Ford.

70 YEARS AGO (1942)

▶ Walter H. Brault defeats George "Dud" Miller by 63 pins in a roll-off for the championship of the annual bowling sweepstakes at Nash's Recreation Parlor.

▶ Dannemora's Helen Smith bowls a 233 in her fourth and final game to capture the Kinney Shoe Co. trophy in the first-ever cross-alley sweepstakes at Nash's Parlor. Smith finishes with a 716. Gladys Herwerth is second with a 682, while Loretta Porter-Shirley, 673; Gertrude Woolever, 658; and Clara Desjardins, 657, round out the top.
