PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Valley Baseball League opened its 2013 season last Sunday with some outstanding pitching performances and three games that went extra innings.
There could be more in store today, highlighted by two rivals going at it at the Big Ball Diamond, where the Lyon Mountain Miners (2-0) will host the Fourth Ward Cardinals (1-1) for two games beginning at noon.
The defending playoff champion Miners got their season off to a good start with two victories in Saranac last Sunday over the Peabody’s Padres (0-2). The Miners won the opener 13-2 in five innings but had to go extra innings for a 9-6 decision in the second contest.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals had two low-scoring games against the Fourth Ward A’s that both took eight innings to complete. Steve Burris pitched six strong innings in a 6-1 win for the Cardinals in the first game. But Plattsburgh State standout Brian Burns struck out 17 over eight innings to lead the A’s to a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Also starting 2-0 were the Meron’s Expos, who recorded a 9-4 and 2-1 doubleheader sweep of the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx. Tyler Greene’s pitching was the difference in the second game for the Expos.
The Expos square off against the A’s at 11 a.m. today at Lefty Wilson Field. The doubleheader was moved up from noon to accommodate tryouts for the Clinton County Mariners American Legion baseball program.
The final twinbill will take place at noon at South Acres Field, where both the Timberjaxx and Padres will be looking to break into the win column.
