Burns fans 17 in A's victory; Miners, Expos win


---- — PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State standout pitcher Brian Burns made his presence known in the Champlain Valley Baseball League on Sunday.

Burns allowed four hits and struck 17 in going the distance in the second game as the Fourth Ward A’s edged out a 2-1, eight-inning win over the Fourth Ward Cardinals to get a split on the day at South Acres Field.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, scored five runs in the top of the eighth for a 6-1 victory in the opener.

In the second contest, Jordan Gillespie’s run-scoring single gave the A’s a walk-off win.

Brian Elliott led the A’s with two hits, and Jake Tolosky added a RBI single.

Jack Tolosky paced the Cardinals with two hits, and Brian Latulipe singled in a run. Alex LaFountain took the loss in relief.

In the opener, Steve Burris went the first six innings and LaFountain finished up to get the pitching victory. Burris and LaFountain combined on a one-hitter, with Phil McGee’s single the lone hit for the A’s.

Michael Howard drove in the lone A’s run with a sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, LaFountain rapped a two-run single, Steve Livsey added a RBI single and Craig Bujold a suicide-squeeze bunt.

Phil McGee took the loss in relief of starter Joe Kirkpatrick. The two combined to allow six hits.

SARANAC — Defending playoff champion Lyon Mountain won a one-sided first game and then outlasted Peabody’s in the second contest.

In the opener, Ben Weightman, Jerry Kowalowski and Justin Besaw led the Miners with two hits each, with Kowalowski getting a double. Scott Baker slugged a three-run homer.

David Waldron was the winning pitcher, and Matt Rivers took the loss.

Seven players had a hit each for the Padres, with Shane Perrotte getting a double.

Lyon Mountain held a 4-2 lead when it broke the game open with a seven-run third.

In the second contest, Lyon Mountain scored three runs in the top of the seventh on Kris Chase’s two-run triple and Kasey Favreau’s sacrifice fly to take a 6-5 lead.

But Peabody’s forced extra innings on Andrew Petro’s run-scoring single before the Miners scored three runs in the eighth.

Chase and Reilly Lawless paced the Miners with two hits apiece, and Favreau added a triple. Weightman was the winning pitcher in relief.

Jeff Norton pitched the first seven innings for the Padres, and Brady Burleigh was the losing pitcher in relief.

Matt Hart led the Padres with three hits, including a double, while Perrotte followed with two singles.

PLATTSBURGH — Tyler Greene tossed a six-hitter in the second game as the Meron’s Expos finished off their sweep of the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx.

Greene struck out 10 and walked just one. D.J. Barber pitched five innings in taking the loss.

D.J. DeJesus gave the Timberjaxx the lead with a run-scoring double in the first inning. The Expos tied it in the third and went ahead to stay on Glenn Engstrom’s RBI single in the fifth.

Six players had a hit each for Meron’s, with Greene getting a double.

DeJesus, meanwhile, accounted for two of the Timberjaxx’s hits.

In the opener, Nick Lamica and winning pitcher Billy Davis rapped out three hits each for Meron’s, with Lamica hitting a home run and Davis a double.

A.J. Gordon, Greene and Engstrom chipped in with two hits each, with Engstrom getting a double. Paul Bruno tripled.

The Expos built up a 9-0 lead in the game.

T.J. Brunell paced the Timberjaxx with two hits, and DeJesus went the distance in taking the pitching loss.
