Peru girls prevail in marathon tennis match

CHAMPLAIN — Peru and Northeastern Clinton battled each other tough in girls’ tennis Monday.

Four matches went to a deciding third set, and the Indians came away with a 4-1 victory over the Cougars in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference tennis.

The best match of the afternoon was Northeastern Clinton’s lone win, as Jenna LaValley outlasted Karri Kusalonis, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), at No. 2 singles.

Anna Mitchell and Taylor Higgins needed three sets in their No. 1 doubles victory for Peru. It was the same in No. 2 doubles with Shania Howard and Brynn Mousseau coming away with the win.

Karlee Goddeau-Stefaniak battled back to defeat Aurora Slater in No. 3 singles, after dropping the first set. Margaret Mitchell won at No. 1 singles in straight sets.

Peter Daly needed a tiebreaker in the second set to pull away from Ryan Marks in Peru’s 3-2 win over the Cougars.

The Indians won all three singles matches, with Connor Bond and John McAuliffe collecting wins.

Northeastern Clinton too both doubles matches. Adam Khater and McKenna Hunter, and Austin Tetreault and Devin McManus came away with wins.

LAKE PLACID — It was a strong effort by the Blue Bombers, but the Hornets found ways to win each match on Monday.

The best matchup was in No. 3 singles with Plattsburgh’s Brendan Whalen against Lake Placid’s Justin Stosiek. The match needed three sets to settle, but eventually Whalen took the match, 6-3, 6-7, 6-0.

For doubles, it was the final match of the afternoon between the Hornets’ Matt Bracy and Guillermo Saguar-Urquiola against the Blue Bombers’ Haley Thompson and Michael Morrison. This match also needed to go into the third set to decide the winner, but ultimately Bracy and Saguar-Urquiola came out victorious with a 6-4 win in the final set.

“Those two matches were the best,” Lake Placid coach George Bailey said. “It would have been nice to go 3-2, but the matches went to Plattsburgh, they were the better team.”

Georgia O’Leary and Joan O’Leary captured their singles matches as the Blue Bombers won in girls’ tennis.

Sophie Morrelli and Kayla Hudson added a win in No. 2 doubles.

Olivia Carlsson led Plattsburgh with a win at No. 3 singles. Emily Kneifel and Ashley Marlow were winners at No. 1 doubles.

PLATTSBURGH — The visiting Chiefs were able to roll to 10 straight match victories against the Knights.

The match of the day came in No. 3 singles between Saranac’s Mark Lapointe and Seton Catholic’s Keagan Briggs.

The match needed three sets to declare a winner. Lapointe took the first set 6-3, while the second set was a close match, as Briggs won a 7-6 with the tiebreak. However, Lapointe came out hot to start the third set and took the match, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.

As for the girls, Saranac was able to win three of their matches on the court as Anna Dorrance and Kayla Napper were able to defeat Seton Catholic’s Kelli Ryan and Shannon Egan in two sets. The Knights forfeited the third singles match due to lack of depth on their roster.

The Chiefs Kristen Napper and Aimee Eggelston defeated Lauren Richter and Alyse Clark, in the only girls’ doubles match played Monday. Seton Catholic was forced to forfeit the second girls’ doubles match as well.

CLINTONVILLE — Olivia Wyand won her No. 1 singles match in straight sets as the Eagles defeated the Patriots.

Anna Stitt and Tegan Belrose were also winners for Beekmantown in singles. Julie Solberg and Chelsey Tallada picked up a doubles victory.

AuSable Valley was paced by Maddy Hall and Alexis Willett winning at No. 1 doubles.
